Great pay

I guess the issue is should judges be able to have a financial interest in their cases?

Now do Orleans Parish. They can’t keep their courtrooms open. Pick your poison, I guess.

I don’t think Orleans has a Justice of the Peace because of its municipal structure that dates back to previous state constitutions that established the Justice of the Peace network of courts.

In some areas there are too many Justices of the Peace where taking on the job as justice of the peace is a part time job. While in Jefferson Parish the legislature should have either eliminated the court as it became urbanized or split the districts into smaller Justice of the peace courts, but that creates other problems and separate constable offices.

Heck even in small cities they create little kingdoms of small agencies like City Marshals and City Courts. Thibodaux is one where the City Marshal has carved out his own posse almost acting like a separate quasi police force while in the same building as city police while the marshal makes more than the actual police chief.

In some areas like Terrebonne Parish, the Houma City Court/Marshal’s offices were expanded parish wide and handle disputes of under 50k, all juvenile offenders, and evictions. But even with that expansion, they still left the justice of the peace network of smaller courts and constables in unincorporated Terrebonne parish.

One thing I meant was that it is incorrect that he is not a lawyer. He is a lawyer.

Yeah that was my bad. The Guardian article I didn't link in OP. Mentioned that "and you don't have to be a lawyer" and I misread.

The WWL link is different but I shared that one because it's local news.

In those eviction cases two questions are asked.
Do you have a current unexpired lease?
and
Are you up to date with your rent?

If the answer to both of these questions is yes, the case would probably not be in court anyway.
If the answer to either one is no, the tenant legally should be evicted.

but i’m not sure the same applies to a state district court judge.

Don't even need to be a lawyer to be a Supreme Court Justice. Most states don't require it either.

Went to law school with his son and daughter (twins). His son was an Aggie undergrad IIRC. Ran track there and apparently broke out the Aggie colors during a law school fun run or something. Seems like it may have made it into that year’s Assault and Flattery.

That’s all I’ve got.
