As an older millennial (38) I'm screwed in terms of retirement. Most millennials, Gen Z's and even some of Gen X will never get to retire in the way Baby Boomers are able to retire.

Holy shite. I’m not sure you’re an actual millennial. You’re more a caricature of what us older people mock about millennials.

You’re 38 and still don’t know you are the person responsible for your retirement? You’ve been an adult for 20 years. Even accounting for college you should be at least 15-16 years into your career. You’ve had plenty of time to start saving for retirement. In fact, you should be at a point where you’re starting to see real growth in your retirement saving. If you’re not, that’s on you. Have you spent your entire adult life expecting someone to tell you how to plan for retirement? Or that your plan should start as soon as you enter the workforce? You’re actually almost 40 and haven’t figured this out yet?

Nobody is responsible for your welfare other than you. If you haven’t figured that out by now, then all I can say is it sucks to be you. I’m sorry mommy and daddy never informed you that once you’re an adult you will either take care of yourself or fail. No one is going to do it for you.

quote:

Besides all that, what is so great about retirement anyway? Work your butt off for 40 years and physically destroy your body to get maybe 5 or 10 years in retirement? Who knows what you'll even be able to do in your 60s and 70s. It's something that I've definitely thought about since the pandemic.

Well why don’t you just go curl up in a corner and sit there waiting to die? Give me a break.

I'm only 37 and even I was smart enough to heavily invest in Beanie Babies way back when

I’ve been with Caterpillar for 30 years. One of the best decisions I’ve made was to start on day one planning on retirement.

I appreciate all the feedback. I apologize for not being able to respond earlier as I was out most of the day.

You all are right in that mentally I'm not in a great place. I'm always fatigued, I've lost interest in things I used to really enjoy and I do think about death regularly. Probably not exactly the healthiest thing. The biggest thing I probably need to do right now is focus on myself and getting to a better place mentally. I don't know exactly how I will achieve that yet but I know that's where I need to start.

I still think the concept of a planned death is interesting, maybe even appealing, but I understand that I've used discussion of this topic as a deflection to how I really feel about life in general. Especially the crushing loneliness in my life and the lack of a meaningful romantic relationship (dating has never been my strength). It's partially my own fault, I never thought I needed anyone. I now realize how wrong I really was.

Why is it that if a pet is old, suffering, and dying we say it's cruel to not put them down, but when it's a human to do so is unthinkable?

I’m, 67, retired for over a decade, and every single thing about retirement is great. Physically I’m in better shape than I was before I retired. Just got back from hiking in the Pacific Northwest. Most of my friends my age and a lot older are also doing great. Our retirement years are. nothing like our Father’s retirement years. No way I would just pick some arbitrary date to die, the potential for great experiences is worth taking the risk of ending up with a long protracted illness, or dying in some less than desirable manner.

Nobody dies with dignity, it's an excuse we tell ourselves. The last joke is we shite ourselves on the way out.

I'm 33, and I do understand my life is my responsibility, but it's also terrifying for us younger folk seeing the shite show that is our economy.

I've seen several in this thread say the exact same shite but have yet to find anywhere in the OP where he stated such a thing.

this.

frickheads in this thread are forgetting just how many people had disposable income and are now having to live paycheck-to-paycheck because of rapid-inflation.
