The Columns in late 90s early 00s was a life saver

Every Friday evening they would throw fried catfish out for free for anyone coming there to drink. College and first job me never took this for granted and was always well fed on Fridays, and I would eat enough to make up for the shitty food I had to eat 6 days and 20 hours the rest of the week. If I couldn’t make my college schedule around this, then it was just knowing that I was bouncing before the bell rang to get there before they ran out. My first job was sales so I always had “clients to visit” every Friday around 4 o’clock.
Thank you Columns for allowing me to spend an appropriate amount of cash on my makers and water instead of having to drop a bill at Taco Bell. Thank you Columns for making me the successful man I am today. I am forever in your debt.
*Honorable mention: Foodies Kitchen in Matairie. You served free bread along with 25cent rain vodka martinis. No it can’t beat free catfish, but gotdamn I would get full and drunk on that delicious Wednesday outing. You too were part of my survival.
I know you lsu baws had your Gottis with your foil line backpacks, but what else you got that can compare to Columns? Anyone else here remember those Column days? shite even Norman Robinson would hit it up with his entourage of boot lickers.

And could put down some catfish. His minions were constantly bringing him new plates and dabbing the grease from his chin between bites.
If he’s here reading this he would confirm

Just eat Popeyes and drink dollar whiskey drinks at Miss Mae’s/the club.
You could have saved some money.

Ms Mae’s is legit. They are repainting it right now which makes me a bit sad. Unfortunately young college me was too fancy for Ms Mae’s. My pinky was full erection sippin on makers eating free catfish at the columns. I was classy.
Older, wiser me recognizes I could’ve ate well and got just as drunk on the same dime the other 6 days of the week. This is why voting age needs to be 25. We couldn’t be trusted

That place was so damn good. Best burger I ever had was from there. Blackened beef with crumbled blue cheese, remoulade sauce, and avocado spread. On a fresh baked kaiser roll.

Money saved would probably have been spent sending someone to the store for a few pints of Pedialyte the next day though.

Byron from Hyde park would have amazing free red beans and rice on Monday nights at the hanger when he took over in the early 00s

Is Hyde Park the one by Touro? If so that’s where John Fourcade would try and run underage tail. I stayed away from there, because I didn’t want an accidental statutory. It was the TJs for those who couldn’t get into TJs

Yes. It’s been chopped up and turned into about three different places now. Great bar during late 90s

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the brass rail down Highland rd. 25 cent rotgut bourbon and one of the best and cheapest hamburgers and French fries you could get.
6 or 7 bucks could get your belly full and totally hammered and Friday afternoon totally entertained with people watching

Once I worked my way up from super poor to just a poor, Swamp Room was my new Friday evening hangout for burgers, beer and the deer hunting game. I made the switch when Columns decided they didn't want us poors coming in there for free food anymore and stopped putting out the catfish.

In the years after, Dana's Sports Bar next door had a horse racing virtual game that was fun as hell
I had a half thoroughbred half zebra that won a shite ton of races
Also had good burgers

Man, the Hangar brings back memories. Great shows back in the day including Cory Morrow and Roger Creager when Brad was managing.
I saw Byron a few years ago...he was a barker for Scores on Bourbon Street. He was not looking too good.
