He was the officer who wrote a letter to his superiors pleading for his crew to be quarantined in the face of this Wuhan Virus pandemic.

ETA: I can't find the original Reuters article that says officials believed he leaked it to the press and in the article leaked below it says the acting SECNAV doesn't believe he did so. He was just careless and disseminated it to 20-30 people, thus making it easier for the memo to leak.

Reuters likely had it wrong.

Probably didn't do something morally wrong. But you can't have any members of the military especially someone as highly ranked as a Captain leaking ANYTHING to the press in regards to military intelligence. Probably creates a target for that ship to our enemies as they know it is facing turmoil or will be undermanned.

If he wrote the letter and sent it up the chain of command, then he is probably still in command.

If he leaked it to the press it is a matter of national security, at a minimum he should be removed from command and his security clearance revoked.

I am no hero, it's true. But as a current active duty sailor, I wouldn't want my commanding officer revealing the condition of my unit to the world and to those who want to kill me.

If he leaked it to the press, that was chicken shite. What I want to know is who allowed the port of call in Vietnam in the face of this pandemic. I find it hard to believe that the skipper didn't have final say so on that.

Ok if we're doing the whole qualifying thing, as a current active duty soldier I won't speak to the Navy's response but the HQDA's response has been mired in disorganization, indecisiveness and has been completely reactive in nature. Sounds like a commander who's focus was the welfare of his men and decided on a COA that was poorly thought out. Wouldn't classify that as "cowardice in the face of the enemy".

Should have been relieved in Vietnam when he let them get off there. What an idiot.

That might be a little harsh but the Roosevelt operates in the face of the Chinese navy. As far as I'm concerned, they are our greatest threat at the present time and we just had an officer in charge of one of our country's most powerful assets against them declare to the world that we are unready to face them if they were to make an aggressive move in southeast Asia.

Please. If you're a sick as shite sailor with 99 of your stinky mates all crammed in the same sick bay together you wouldn't think twice to utter the words "frick you, Admiral, right in the Rear."

And good grief, I hope I had a Captain who gave a frick enough. This war game blah blah you're yapping about is nonsense. What submarine is chasing them, Denzel?

I don’t disagree with you on those points. I also don’t disagree their should be punitive action if he was the one that leaked the letter.

I would suspect as the Captain of the Roosevelt, he would be pretty well read in on the threat China poses.

Looking at it from a strategic perspective, this isn’t a pandemic specific to the US forces and how much of a degradation of force projection capabilities would an aircraft carrier see with an infection rate that mirrors those of the cruise ships we’ve seen?

How can you be that dumb after being in the Navy long enough to command a carrier?

It's not what he did, it's how he did it. I completely sympathize with those sailors as I've been there and done that. I don't think there is anything worse than 70+ straight days at sea onboard a submarine. Been there. Done that.

However, he allegedly circumvented the chain of command and leaked this memo to the press. He didn't trust the system and he publicly revealed that one of our most important assets in the Pacific is down with the plague.

It was perfectly fine for him to the write the memo to his superiors. And if he isn't the one who leaked it I will be the first to apologize. But if this guy did leak this, he may have thought he was helping his crew (and he was) but he was also helping our adversaries at the same time.
