The cable barriers erected on the interstate are a waste of money

And unsafe. Most of the time the cable is slack from a wreck and not repaired.
They are all grown up with grass and vines and make the maintenance costs more expensive.
They make minor wrecks into major wrecks, causing significant damage where there might have been none.
And they are a death trap for motorcycles.

They prevent head on crossover collisions and save lives. You're wrong.

"Saw the man going very fast"
"He lost control"
You had a couple valid points going before you brought up motorcycles.

Amen! I've been saying this for months. Some of the interstates that they're being built alongside are so bumpy that they will put you into the cable barriers.
What is their supposed purpose?

I have a buddy who is severely disabled from a cross over head on collision. Cables would have prevented the wreck.

How big of a problem was that? How many have been saved?
Most of the cables are damaged and slacked and wouldn't stop anything.
They are killing people who would have just stopped in the median.
They have cut down trees and natural barriers that actually did stop that to install these crappy cables.
Intent does not equal success.
This was a straight up boondoggle.

Sounds from the coverage like he was going too fast and wasn't wearing a helmet like an idiot. Sounds like the cable saves innocent lives on the other side of the cables from this careless motocycle driver coming across and hitting them. Sounds like you're wrong. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

You're wrong about everything

But if he would have wrecked into the median he might have lived. These artificial barriers are dangerous.
Posted on 2/5/17 at 3:36 pm to Bjorn Cyborg
I like them because police can't cross over the median to come get you.

I just want to know how they select the poor bastard who gets to mow between the cable barrier and the edge of the pavement. I'm guessing they don't pick one of their top guys.

It is amazing to me to see the breaks in the barrier cabling after it is installed. I had no idea crossovers were so much of an issue until I saw the number of cabling breaks.
I witnessed a loaded concrete truck crossover I-10 out of BR east bound a few years ago. Several cars on the West bound lanes left the interstate as the loaded truck was headed towards them. The truck crashed into the trees off the right shoulder and mixed concrete went everywhere. I'm certain that driver did not survive that crash, but never knew the outcome. How others did not die is beyond me.

You are spewing bullshite. You have no facts to back up what you're claiming and have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. The cable barriers have virtually eliminated crossover head on collisions which are nearly almost fatal. Just stop.

Perhaps in theory. I saw about 30 miles of slack and broken cable barrier today on I-20. It was broken and all grown up with vines. It wouldn't have saved anyone's life.

If a barrier is broken, there's a good chance it already saved a life.

You are also spewing bull shite. How many people have died crashing into the barrier?
What about the miles of unmaintained barrier?
I understand the problem, but this solution is horrible.

Would you rather hit a tree or cables designed to absorb the energy? There is supposed to be a budget for repairs, but just like normal road maintenance, there is a backlog. From a probability perspective, the chance of a crossover at the same place as a damaged cable system is low.

What are the chances that someone is forced onto the interstate median right at the spot that is damaged or slacked?
I had a good friend die in 1982 when he was traveling north on I-55 and fell asleep at the wheel. Normally, he would have gently hit the railing and it would more than likely woken him up.
In his case, there was a car parked on the shoulder of the road precisely at the spot where he fell asleep, he rear ended the parked car and was killed instantly. RIP
I guess when it's your time, it's your time.
