The Blues are transitioning to the Super Hornets after years in the FA/18. These seem super loud and a tad bit bigger. For those of you old enough to remember it may be a throwback to the old F4 Phantom days.

Sweet. Had a beautiful black out floating in the bay watching the air show there. Highly recommend.

Must be nice to live by that NAS. I would just hang out outside and watch the bad arse planes as much as I could.

Saw them practicing loops earlier this week. Didn’t know they were breaking in new planes, they were at a pretty good distance.

Gotta say, one of my favorite experiences is when they would do a random low altitude tight formation flyby at the beach on Sunday afternoons. Happened probably a half dozen times over the years, always cool to see the tourists freak out and the locals just glance up and smile

GBA Baby!!!

Question for the simple folk: why does only the second plane show exhaust stream?

What’s the difference between the two?

The Super Hornet is largely a new aircraft at about 20% larger, 7,000 lb (3,200 kg) heavier empty weight, and 15,000 lb (6,800 kg) heavier maximum weight than the original Hornet. The Super Hornet carries 33% more internal fuel, increasing mission range by 41% and endurance by 50% over the "Legacy" Hornet.

The “steam” is actually smoke generated by injection of a paraffin based oil into the exhaust of the engine. It’s only purpose is to make the planes easier to track in the sky at air shows. The smoke can be turn on and off by the pilot. The lead plane or planes will have smoke off so as not to obscure the visibility of the pilots in the plane behind them.

Most, if not all, of these pilots flew F/A-18s at their last operational squadron so it’s nothing new to them. The differences are barely noticeable unless you work with the jets or know a good bit about them (square intake vice oval shaped being one difference). Will be interesting to see if any maneuvers change during shows.

I think the takeoff maneuver is called the Angel Diamond Burner Loop. Barely off the deck, the slot plane moves from right echelon into the slot, forming the diamond. The formation then goes into a loop, which is sheer power, but at the same time graceful. It's a sight to behold!

I’m gonna miss those legacy hornets.
Hoping we get to actually see the Rhinos at air shows next year.

I have heard that the diamond dirty loop might be out

1 and 2 are always together in all maneuvers. In the diamond, 4 is right behind 1, so if 1 had the smoke, 4 would not be able to see what he's doing which is less than ideal when flying within 2 feet of another aircraft. Nobody's ever in formation behind 2, so out of the 1/2 element, 2 runs smoke.

Pumped to hear it. The old F/A-18s just don't sound as intimidating as the F-22s.

Love living in Gulf Shores and working in Ft Morgan. The Blues are always buzzing the beaches and practicing.

One of my favorite childhood memories is going to a blue angels show in Pensacola. We came to show and no one was there. Commander of base was close by and saw me and fam sitting, then invited to sit by him. Best experience I’ve ever had. They were flying 20-30 yards in front of us close to the ground.
