Friend and I have been playing Durak, which is apparently the most popular game in Russia. Durak means fool.

OP, you should also look at Ticket to Ride, which has a Rummy-esque set collection aspect to it. Same with Coloretto.

I had to look this up, but it's just what we call Rummy. I've never played any other way. I agree with Cadillac too. Other honorable mentions are Casino, Rooks, and Hearts.
I had friends that failed out of school because of Hearts games.
