In the summer 2022 semester. The cost of 3 credit hours at two universities near here are both 1200+. The university fees of one of these is more than the actual tuition.

Female enrollment is dropping too. Maybe girls got to school and decided the lack of guys was sub-optimal.

Those auto 3% tuition increases every year without any justification is catching up to them. Loan maximums haven't been increased in a LONG time but tuition is up 50% since that last loan cap...

The average salary for a Curator is $81,684 per year in New York City, NY

That's like poverty line in NYC. Curators don't make much money baw.

Maybe she's not average.

The point is that a lot of times people think a particular degree is worthless, but it's all about what you do with the knowledge you gained in acquiring the degree. Getting a university education is more than just going to a trade school, it's not always just about how much money one can make.

What do colleges and universities do with endowment funds?? Seems like they could actually dip into that money and decrease the cost of their product which might attract more customers.

There's going to be so many millionaires with all the new plumbers out there. I've been told in good authority they make $500k MINIMUM by 25

I think its hilarious how many people you've pissed off with this.

It's only striking a nerve because its true. A skilled plumber with years of experience that has a good nose for business strikes it out on his own and brings in quadruple what he made as a foreman with a skeleton crew doing good work. Somehow that becomes the standard for every 18 year old kid coming out of high school because the 50 year old journeyman has been conveniently left out of the job profile.

Bet you’d be willing to pay that plumber whatever he asks to stop the shite from backing up into your bathroom.

Seems that’s a more marketable and useful skill than anything taught at a Liberal Arts College.

Can't we agree there is a large middle ground between 80k student loans with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and tradesman?

I think both paths get shite on too much. Plumbing is a great way to make a living, and a real tangible skill that can be used in areas other than work. But going to school is not just going to land you in debt with no upside. Just anecdotally, I paid about 30% of my costs out of pocket and ended with an accounting degree and $20k student loans at an interest rate of 3.75%. That isn't bad at all. People spend more than that with higher interest rates on a truck.

People can go to school for construction management, IT, software development, engineering, accounting. Let's not start to be anti-education because of prejudices.

Population is shrinking. There will be less people doing less things. Enrolling in universities included.

As they should be. More and more people are realizing that cheap online universities will get you the same thing for way less money. And with how much attention the student loan problem has gotten in recent years, how can you blame them?

Not everyone should go to college.

We have a perverted system in this country that drives students into student loan debt for worthless degrees.... hear me out.

Historically, why have all these kids with massive student loan debt gone to college?

They were pushed towards it by their public schools' administration. All they hear is "you all need to go to college."

Why are the schools pushing this?

The more kids that go to college, the better the school's rating. The higher the rating, the more expensive it is to live in that school district. How are schools funded? Property taxes. The more expensive the housing in the school's district, the more money the school gets.

My kids are not old enough yet, but when they get into high school, we're going to have a long talk about their future and college. If they have no idea what they want to do with their life, they can figure that out on a job, not while spending $20k+ per semester. They can go to college once they figure it out.

No, it is not. There are not many 25 year old plumbers making $500k.

Of course there aren't.

His post was very obviously sarcasm. What is striking a nerve was the fact that the obviously untrue trope is persistent among people who champion trades as if they are a more financially prudent career choice because there are outliers who are able to start their own business.

For the record: Aveda Institute is not a "university".
