The Appalachian Trail speed record was just broken

That's an average of just under 54 miles per day. Freakin' insane.

One of the most grueling records in American endurance sports fell late Saturday night in northern Georgia. Tara Dower, a 31-year-old ultrarunner and long-distance hiker born in North Carolina and based in Virginia, reached Georgia’s Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, at 11:53 P.M. She completed the arduous southern thru-hike of the iconic trail, crossing 14 states and 2,197 miles, in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. It’s the fastest known time for hiking the iconic trail in either direction.

She had a ride when no one was looking.

40 days off work? Must be nice.

That seems like something you could easily cheat at.

I beg to differ, Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more then an hour ago.

Babytac will be along later to say he's done it in 38, but didn't bother reporting it as he doesn't like the attention...

Ultrarunners are pretty amazing. To take 2 months off to jog the entire Appalachian trail blows my mind.
54 days of running over a marathon per day up mountains, then camping in between runs.

She must have faked her garmin data, then.

This is insane. The two men who held it for a while were going back to back breaking the record.
Barkley Marathons next?

Speed hiking is so fricking lame.

No, 40 days to run 54 a day. Two marathons a day for 40 days straight.

Is this one of the speed runners that had a team, stayed in RVs, and had other assistants? It's extremely impressive to trail run that quickly and that long, but these speed runners doing the longer trails with huge modern conveniences need to be put in different categories.

Dower’s perspective changed during the pandemic. She moved to Hot Springs, North Carolina, an iconic AT trail town, to work for a guiding service owned by Jennifer Pharr Davis, the earlier record holder.
It kind of explains itself.

A man could do it in 20 days but none of us can take off work for that long

I thought she would be a sack of firewood, but she actually has meat on her bones.

I'd be surprised. The were a lot of people involved and they'd all have to be in on it. It's probably legit.
