I see/hear these female talking heads on the media, especially NPR. They think they are the smartest kids in the room, and their voices drone and the ends of their sentences
wind down into a complacent "erhh" from the backs of their throats.

I'd like to slap each one in turn.

They think anyone living in flyover country is a simpleton. And if you live in the south you are barely even a half wit. They know what is best for you. Don’t question them

Don’t you dare talk about ms Landry that way while she’s making sandwiches.

It’s not that they think they are simpletons, but they just think they aren’t as smart or as worldly as the NPR hosts. I don’t think it’s disdain, I think it’s the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Ha, agreed to an extent. Also, seems like they have some sort of NPR name generator for their talking heads. No way those are the real names. Freheiler Loxley-Weiler

Reporters used to adhere to the high standards of the AP Stylebook.

That has been replaced by the "speak-slowly-to-the-proles", condescending-newspeak of NPR: They're quite proud of it

Anybody that believes current day NPR is the real simpleton. They dont think for themselves. Just regurgitate what they hear

It’s got a nasally whistle to it. It’s definitely inflected.

Not an NPR listener, but some podcasts I try to listen to have the “verbal fry condescending voice” that you’re speaking about. If you are going to be condescending, at least talk to me in the “midwestern broadcasting” voice, dammit.

I'm not sure which is worse, the smugness of NPR or the smugness of people who have to announce to the world that they listen to NPR.
