They need to pay for their healthcare. Medicare is about worthless these days unless you have a supplemental plan $$$.

In the middle 50's a single wage earner could support (1) spouse (2-3) kids (1) house, furnished, with a yard (2) cars (2) pets (1) club membership - say for golf (2) social memberships - say Elks and Shriners

As someone who takes up for the millennials routinely in regards to home ownership etc. I don’t think this is necessarily true either.

Boomers routinely say “well go out and find something small and affordable even if it’s in the suburbs”

That’s not even possible anymore. Home prices have been insane for the last 5-6 years AND now interest rates are high but the prices aren’t dropping. You get tiny tract home with minimal yard practically sharing a wall with your neighbors AND 30 minutes to an hour commute for that privilege

On the flip side. My family members of the generation you speak had solid jobs and provided a nice home for their families with yards etc however they didn’t eat out, they didn’t go on vacations and they sure as hell didn’t belong to a country club and 2 social clubs.

So you are doing the opposite side of the same coin

Wtf happened?

Poor people get older? My parents were always poor and my mom started working retail jobs when she was older. Now, it’s just her and my two mentally challenged siblings living in one home. They all work minimum wage type jobs (Walmart and Ross) and are able to have their basic needs net (although they make more than minimum wage now).

My mom will be 70 this year and they could actually manage fine without the money she makes at work. But honestly I think it’s good she is able to get out the house. She has her friends at work and is on her feet at work getting exercise and she is not just sitting on the couch at home all day.

She loves interacting with people and everyone at her work loves her. The customers love her as well cause she is just this really nice old lady helping them out.

Agreed. I don't know how this has become so popular. I guess it makes sense for a business meeting or if you are shitfaced drunk. Otherwise you're paying about a 50-100% markup on a small order

This!

The older you get, the more your competition dies off. Probably a popular guy with his set if he still has a pulse.

Whole different side topic, but you are completely right.

Ordered food the other day. It was $30 to go get it and $54 if it was delivered.

Sure. But not necessarily. For some it would be 10x more expensive to spend the 20-30 mins it takes to drive to the restaurant and back versus paying 10-15 extra for delivery.

Not sure what that has to do with the conversation though.

You said the above. You brought up the "tax writeoff" benefits not me. LOLOL.

I'm just pointing out that your reasoning is retarded.

Carry on.

My step father is about to start working part time at Hi Nabor. He's retired and doesn't need the money but it gives him something to do a few days a week.

I was not talking about some fancy schmantyz country club, I was talking about a plain jane club where you could play golf and had a place for the kids to swim and get hamburgers.

A club like the Elks was in about every city and it was cheap to be a member so it was full of working class folks. Not a lot of fast food back then so it was a place for an inexpensive dinner and drinks a few times a week.

A lot of retirees work in the tourism industry locally during the summer. Used to be college kids who took all these jobs, but they are less employable today.

I’m gathering that old people are taking jobs from the highly motivated young people. Lots of angry young folks in here mad at old people for working. Seems weird to me but whatever

I'm on the over the hill downside of life, 70+++, retired after 30 years with a livable pension, insurance paid for life, and immediately took a job within two months of retirement making twice what I retired at.

In my entire adult working career, work seemed like a vacation all the time. High stress but never did I dread going to work.

I work because I want to. I will never need for anything unless some nursing home takes it all and I end up living to be well over 100, which won't happen. I am salting away enough for my grandchildren to have a jump start on life when I am gone, plus Mrs. Free State and I do a lot for them now. Our kids are successful so why give it to them when we can give it to our grands.

So, the moral of the story: some people from our generation learned to work, not take hand outs or giveaways. I know some folks aren't capable but in my case, I've been blessed beyond measure from having Depression era parents who instilled in us the meaning of being on the job on time, every day.

And by the way for you young whippersnappers, we don't have a Sonic where I live but I will meet you at the Tastee Freeze and I can probably kick your arse.

Put your paycheck into a retirement plan, and invest.
