Yep.. even on a 400,000 home 20% is 80,000

Unless you have an inheritance or family gift, very few can come off that type of cash

My daughter and her family desperately want a house... it is expensive out there!

My husband and I were very fortunate and bought our home when we were 17(me) and 21(him). I don't know how young adults are supposed to afford a home these days.

if that was your house, and the realtor told you it would list for 500K, you would say no?

Just as a starter home isn’t the one you want to live in the rest of your life, it also probably won’t be in the area you want to live in for the rest of your life. I did a quick look at towns around Baton Rouge. I found the town of Livingston. It’s 30 min east of downtown Baton Rouge.

Notice it’s the same square foot as the one in BR.

Here’s a home in Zachary, a town 20 min north of BR…

It’s half the price of the house in BR.

My point in saying all this is that for someone just starting out in life to afford a house, they may have to move a bit further out of the big towns to find something affordable. Live there until they’ve saved up, gotten raises, etc and are in a potto move up the homeowner ladder and move into that dream neighborhood.

You know who didn’t have to move 20 miles outside of BR to afford an 1100 sq foot house? Every generation before

That’s the entire point. Housing costs are insane compared to the past

The fact you are posting a house for sale in Livingston parish going for $152 a sq ft as a good deal shows you are insane That’s fricking expensive as shite for that house too

And Baton Rouge and NOLA aren't anywhere near the most expensive markets to live

Yes, I know how median works. My response was to someone that indicated only Boomers were the home buyers so I am not off base by pointing out Genx started in 1968. In fact people in the higher half would be Gen X and since GenX started in 65 the lower half would include Gen X. It would almost be an even split between Boomers and Gen X.

It's also it's well know fact people born in 1968 are voracious eaters!

Most public schools in LP are decent. That would be a shite commute though. Probably more like an hour one way than 30 minutes.

There’s maybe 10 public schools in the entire state that are “decent”

My first house that I bought for myself 30+ years ago was a used single wide trailer in a middle of nowhere community, not even a town, called Tait’s Gap. Lived there for about 3 years and bought a 1,100 sq foot 3 bed/2 bath house built in the 1950s, still about 45 min from Bham and 7 miles outside of the nearest town. Lived there about 5 years and moved into a nice two story brick 3,000 sq foot in a nice subdivision in town. Don’t tell me this is the first generation that can’t afford the nice big house in the middle of town.

And guess what? That would be disproportionately more expensive if someone did the exact same thing today

Not a difficult concept to grasp

Whether it be a mansion or a trailer park, it’s more expensive today relative to income than ever before

I will factually tell you this generation has to spend more of their income to buy a home than any generation ever before regardless of the type of home

You don’t go to college, people with STEM degrees can’t afford a 1,000 sq foot house within 30 minutes of their job. That’s insane, making excuses for it is even more insane. That’s not good for anyone

Newsflash: life is hard and unfair. And no one owes you, nor will they give you, anything. Bitching and whining about it will get you nowhere.
