I work at the largest A-10 wing in the Air Force, and every day I see the amount of man hours and parts that are put into these to keep them air worthy. It's a ton, and parts are getting harder and harder to come by.
So fricking sorry yall had to work a little bit harder to preserve the lives of those doing real work. The nerve they have to ask for a little protection when it might cut into your lunch break. What gall!!!!!!!! !

When I saw the length of that video, I almost didn't watch it. I'm glad I did. The footage from inside those A-10's in pretty incredible. I would love to know what if feels like to be in a cockpit of one while firing

I'll never forget my first exposure to the A10 - was working on my place on Lake Vernon when I noticed this weird sound getting louder. Looked up and it was the ugliest, weirdest, aircraft I'd ever seen passing overhead at about treetop level.
Researched them a bit and have been a huge fan of them ever since.

Precision bombs are dropped just as effectively by any other fighter, and those fighters can get to the fight faster while the Stinger II and Ghostrider can stay on target for a MUCH longer time.
What fastmovers have the loiter time/ordinance capability/etc that makes the A-10 so deadly in CAS missions? Please don't say the much vaunted piece of shite F-35, either.

The a-10 is undoubtedly the best at what it does... unfortunately for the aircraft and its fans, what it does is in limited scope in the big picture of warfare, and that scope is narrowing.
I would say that the A10s scope is exponentially larger than the F35. Fact is we've been fighting ground wars where deep strike capabilities and talk all over the world technology is absolutely useless. And more than likely the next war will be very similar. I imagine if you looked at the flight hours flown over the last 15 years the vast majority of them would be on CAS.
I get that we need to be ready for a full scale war with a peer competitor but not at the sake of our best CAS platform when most of our current and foreseeable missions will be CAS is a low threat environment.
If we need a deep strike stealth aircraft we can build more B2s.

I'll never forget back in the early 90's I was flying a cleared photo mission over Ft. Polk. Once we were done with our mission we climbed from 9000' to over 12,000' as we were exiting the controlled airspace. We were handed off to Houston center from Ft. Polk before we got to the perimeter of the base and over the drone of the airplane motor and the wind (unpressurized cabin) i felt a low rumble enter the plane. You could feel it in your chest.
Looked back thru the back glass of the Cessna to see 6 A-10's running target runs on a target in the woods and could see the smoke trails from the guns as they fired.
Was the coolest thing ever. They were attacking the target from about 2000' and i was at 12,000' and could feel the percussion from those guns that far away.

always thought it was bad-arse that the A-10 is basically built around it's cannon.
Also that it is known for being able to take a lot of damage and keep going.

Are you saying that the F35 can do CAS as well as the A10, that it can do air to air as well as the F22?
I'm saying it wasn't designed for either of those. The F-22 was designed to be an Air Superiority fighter, so no I wouldn't expect the F-35 to equal it. The A-10 was designed to be a CAS platform against 1970s era Soviet units. The AF screwed up the message when it intimated that the F-35 was to replace the A-10. That's not really the case. The F-35 was needed for more than just CAS and the only way the AF could logically find to pay for it was to stop spending money on the A-10. No one ever intended the F-35 to be a one-for-one replacement of the A-10 in the CAS role.
The A-10 does marvelous work in Afghanistan and Syria where we aren't facing any sort of surface-to-air fire. The point is that if we were engaged in a "near-peer" fight, you have to have assets that can roll back their air defenses enough to even be able to do CAS. That's why we need the F-35. Without the air defenses rolled back the A-10 will be sitting back doing nothing because they can't survive the threats posed.

Some battle damaged A-10s. Couldn't imagine F-35 could take that...especially with 1 engine..
Missile strike on engine...

Bucket o'smiles you are. Lighten up, Francis, I wasn't attacking you. Simply making the point that the A-10 has a crapload of different names. Quit being so defensive.

Are you too dense to understand that it's not a one for one swap?
The Stinger II has bombs, missiles, a 30mm cannon and a 105mm howitzer. It can take out anything that an A-10 can while loitering as long as it's needed.
Other fighters can provide payload much faster too.

If you're complaining about the survivability of the A10 you can't say that the AC130 can do the job the A10 can do. It's even less survivable. They're both great platforms. They are both great at what they do. They F35 isn't great at anything. It's just okay at some things.

if you hear the A-10 fart, it's likely you gonna die

Do you not realize that there are BRAND NEW gunships rolling off of the assembly line as I type this?
Posted on 9/11/15 at 9:22 am to cubsfan5150
What is your point? The can't fly in even a low threat environment during the day. They support SOF forces for the most part at night. The A10 is at least somewhat survivable in a low to medium threat environment along the front line. Especially when enemy air defenses are suppressed.

The AF could to a full scale modernization program on the A-10 for a fraction of the cost of the F-35 to correct your issues and it would still be a far more capable CAS platform than the F-35 will ever hope to be.

You obviously know nothing about the new gunships. We aren't talking Vietnam era technology anymore.
Posted on 9/11/15 at 9:33 am to elprez00
Probably true, but again we aren't talking one for one replacement.
