I was 18 in 1989. The '80s were amazing.

Grandpas didn't go near the stove back then unless he was cooking a special occasion glory meal. Grandma did all the blue collar cooking.

I was born in 1963 and while I'm bumming a little about getting old being a young adult in the 80’s was awesome as frick. We used to party down totally uninhibited and politics and butthurt feelings didn't permeate into every damn thing. It was such a better time and the music was better to except for the weird little new wave spell we went through

It's an exaggeration for comic effect, but it is accurate as far as I'm concerned. If we didn't leave the house by about 9 AM
During summer break until I was about 8 or 9 my parents actually paid good money to a lady with a "home daycare" just for her to kick me out of her house all day.

Getting old is better than the alternative. The 80's were awesome.

Sure as hell didn't. Didn't seem to be as many pussies back then.

My mom used to lock the door behind me when I went outside to play. I was allowed inside for lunch, and my arse better have been home by the time the streetlights came on. If I got thirsty, I could drink out of the hose.

I've started enjoying birthdays again after shifting my thinking from, "Damn. I'm another year older" to "Ha! Made it another year, assholes".

Just make sure you let it run for a few seconds before drinking

In the early 90's we used to wander into the woods around daylight. No one thought to look for us until it got dark or they needed us for free labor.

I get it, baw, your parents were nothing but a burden, right? All the room, board, clothes, school lunch money, A/C, vacations, you were just entitled to all that.

I actually made short work of that period, myself. Since I've made lots of ene... *ahem* - I have many folks with whom I have passionate, sincere, deeply held differences, I pivoted through this era of my life at blazing speed.

Aye. But we live in age where being victim is the highest form of virtue.

Even the 80s kids are competing in the Victim Olympics.

I might not have realized it then but I sure as hell appreciate it now. Way too many out there that don't know how to do anything. Our parents were like Mr. Miyagi's, they taught us how to do things.

Imagine getting to experience all this outdoor activity & hear Metallica, RATT, & Prince in their prime. That was my 80’s childhood.

but our parents had a general idea what we were up to. Our neighborhood was pretty tight though where everyone knew each other, and even the ones without kids talked to the parents. If we needed to be home, a call or two around the hood was all they needed to find us and have an adult send us home.

My kids were born in '87 and '91. This was pretty much the norm. However, there were plenty times that they went from one house to the other and didn't call. That would lead to a drive around the 'hood to see if we could find them. Or we would look at Ben and Brandon's house. Their parents paid no attention whatsoever to what they did and kids could have been playing at the "ditch" (drained into Cypress Creek). They could do about anything as long as they stayed in the neighborhood and didn't go to the "ditch." Pretty sure my son's happiest times were at the ditch or riding 4 wheelers through a new neighborhood being built that connected by walking down the ditch.

They also always got told to get out of the house. A pack of sweaty kids at my door was met with cold drinks (Squeezers or Capri Suns), ice pops, or if they were really lucky, ice cream. They were sent outside with their refreshments and didn't return. I'm sure they hit up another mom for some snack.

The hose pipe thing made me think of something I haven't thought about in forever. When I was a kid, mom would only let us have one cup to use every day. Like if I had a cup of milk or orange juice in the morning, that cup was my cup for the day and I had to use it for every drink, otherwise she'd be running the dishwasher all the time. That concept seems so weird to me now, but also make a ton of sense.
