They sell your number.

I get 10 or so mortgage refinance calls a day. I don't own a home.

That's because they are constantly changing numbers, and/or duplicating actual people's numbers. Therefore, there is no way to track them down and enforce the rules. The block feature on cell phones is great.

I always immediately answer - “ok John [or Jennifer if a chick], close your windows tonight” when they call on the off chance they actually have that name and shite their pants.

Your best bet is to not answer any unrecognized numbers. If it is important or legitimate, they'll leave voice mail or text message.

Once you have identified the spam caller, block their number with your cell phone (most have this built in today).

They are tricky though, because many spammers using a local area code when calling.

I've gotten to that point also.

I was getting calls about my auto warranty expiring multiple times per day. None of them could ever tell me which car it was. One little oriental punk got pissed off when I asked him and he told me it wasn't his job to know.

I work in sales so that's a dumb option.

I probably miss one legit call for every 100 sales calls that I ignore.

I got a spam call from my own number the other day. The caller ID just said "My info". I know they're using spoofed numbers when they call but getting one from your own number is just insulting.

I have caller id on my phone, sometimes it will just say "spammer" for flagged numbers.
If it just says a city I ask about the weather.

Was with a business partner the other day. His phone rang and he answers "Hey, uncle George." He then puts it on speaker and it's a telemarketing call He hangs up and shows me the caller ID. It displays Uncle George Cell on the ID.

I get a ridiculous amount of spam calls that have a local area code and a number that has the same first three digits as my number.

I had one a few years ago where the scammers called and it showed up on the caller ID as the number for the Birmingham Police. When I answered they pretended to be the police and told me there was a warrant out for my arrest and that I needed to pay to avoid being arrested.

I got rid of my home phone because of this, and don't answer calls I don't recognize on my cell. They never leave a message.
