My younger sister is in college in California. She doesn't have her car up there, so she has to get Uber/cabs to go places almost every day. She started out using cabs, but they were completely unreliable, took too long to get there, were dirty and smelled, and the drivers were disgusting. She quit using cabs after the first week and a half, and exclusively uses Uber. She has nothing but praise for them.
If these stupid fricks screw this up and everyone has to go back to trashy cabs, I'm gonna punch my neighbor's cat. It's typical union bullshite to want more from a company, not realizing that it'll just close and they'll be out of a job if they win.

Maybe California will make it illegal for a company like this to require de facto employees to be independent contractors and to carry the burden of associated costs, as a condition of employment.

I am fairly conservative, both fiscally and socially; but some regulation is necessary. I do understand the argument that uber skirts past certain safety regulations do to its unique contractor system. Not abiding by the same rules as others that you are directly competing with is not a good thing for the free market system. Admittedly this is not the point of this lawsuit but I do agree with the judge possibly being in on the fix, so to speak.

there's the common sense things like you can't decline every ride, you can't be getting bad reviews, etc., but there's no boss to report to. you make your own hours

Again, this is Union shite. The unionized airports ban Uber there to stand with the unionized taxi companies.
All you have to do is get a short, cheap taxi ride outside of the airport gates and then call an Uber.

No, it isn't. Über self regulates with the rating system. It's the free market. It is a much better system than government regulation which is just some bullshite excuse for the government to collect fees.

Wrong. That is business interests lobbying local and state governments to keep things rigged in their favor.
The taxi association is not a labor union. A lot of these areas that are imposing price floors on Uber are not liberal Union-loving democrats. In many cases they are "small government conservatives."
It's similar to Texas not allowing Tesla to circumvent the car dealers.
