Watch Baws, talk me out of this

It looks great on the wrist, titanium because I’m hard on watches, and I’m a big fan of NATO bands. I’ve never spent remotely close to this much on a watch.

Am I going to be happy with this?

Is this unlocking a very expensive hobby?

You've come to the wrong place and that is a fantastic watch and definitely a gateway drug. That FXD is excellent, just know (and you probably do) that it has fixed lugs, so strap only (you said you like NATO).

I think Tudor is a huge value prop. I'm holding off on a Pelagos out of hope for a 39 mm version of the FXD, and hopefully one that will have cream faux-tina indices.

Here's what that one looks like on my skinny wrist:

And here's what I'm sporting today "L" serial number (1989) 16610:

No. FXD is my current dream watch.

Eta: marathon mini gsar on the factory rubber strap. My metal bracelet is just about shot, and they are over $400 now

Kinda hate myself for dogging mine out now. I think it was $125 when I bought it and that was steep to me.

I need a date or day/date especially on a watch that large.

After a decade with mine, I've decided that I don't like day or day/date complications. I think id get more use from a GMT watch, since I use zulu time at work a fair bit. The day and date I generally do not need to be reminded of. The day/date is just another thing I have to jack with a few times a year.

If you have the 41mm model Island Watch makes a bracelet for it that has on the fly micro adjust for less than $150 I believe.

Good deal.

I have the 38mm one.

I think im going NATO anyway. I liked the bracelet but now that it's basically trashed, I don't think I'll be getting another one.

I would never try to talk someone out of a watch that I thought was a good watch and the FXD is indeed a good watch. I would just suggest you consider versatility (which you may have already). I think the Pelagos, LHD and Pelagos 39 are often a better choice in a smaller rotation since the FXD is more specialized. The previous 3 offer "all" the options as far as bracelet and straps where the FXD is significantly limited.

The 42mm, 39mm, and FXD all wear differently so it is a try before you buy scenario. You have the option of date, no date, or roulette date wheel. I really like the roulette date wheel on the LHD enough that if I was making the decision today it would likely be my choice.

Serious question: but are you? I ask because over the years I have interacted with a lot of watch nerds that like me went a little nuts during the great NATO renaissance but ultimately realized they weren't as big of a fab as they thought. My wife and I bought tons of them... and rarely wore them. For us the fantasy did not meet the reality. You may be completely different, many are, but give some thought before you lock in with your most expensive watch to date.

The FXD is a great watch, period, but so is the rest of the Pelagos line. You have almost certainly considered the versatility angle but if not I suggest you do and try as many of the options you can before you decide.

Maybe and maybe not. You may find you are a one watch guy and you found the one watch, wear it for 20 years and pass it down or you might end up on Plank road in a wig and lipstick sucking dick for watch money. Fortunately, you will likely be somewhere in between.

Pure class.

Just a friendly reminder Watches and Wonders starts on April 1...

I figure we can use this thread to follow it.

I miss Basel World.

This should be a good one since there are a lot of anniversaries this year. Rolex had a down year last year but expect some interesting things this year.

What I want that will not be released is a Tudor BB 58 GMT with an opaline dial on Jubilee.

Can't wait to see what comes out of there.

I had the white dial 8 day Portugieser with the blue indices and hands, dark blue croc leather. Great looking watch, just big for me. Can't remember what I traded it for, but I owned it in the days when those were pretty reasonable, probably somewhere in the 2007-2010 range - my free wheelin' watch days. It was one of my favorite watches to look at and admire, just not wear because of the size. IWC cases are typically beautifully proportioned and the relationship of crystal to case is just about perfect.
