you can spot a replica a mile away because gold is almost impossible to replicate with plating or a wrap. always looks like cheetoes in the end.
real gold looks like...real gold.

Thanks! 3940 is perhaps my favorite non-stratospheric reference of the last 40 years. I prefer mid-century Patek (who doesn’t) but those waters are far too deep for me.

I'm not much a a modern Omega fan - most of their offerings have one thing or another that put me off. I own this one mostly for historical significance, but I will say that they finally got a good bracelet with this one. Comfortable, not over done looking and has a nice taper which helps the proportion of this watch. Bigger than I care for at 42mm width, but manageable 47 mm lug to lug and supremely legible. I chose the Hesalite version as a nod to history and I think the bracelet looks better than the sapphire sandwich version with the shiny bits on the inside part of the big links. Doesn't hurt that cal. 3861 is METAS and master chronometer certified either.

I do wish I could view the movement sometimes, but that’s the only minor negative with the Hesalite model IMO. Have thought about modding it with a display back in the future, but probably not worth it.

Did so myself, bought one from from Spiralwinder, cracked the back open and wore it like that for a little while, then put the real caseback back on. I bought the un-engraved version. Didn't look right at all. I do enjoy the light effects on the plastic crystal though, glad I went with that verson.

Panerai 087 Submersible "La Bomba" on polished stingray
I didn't take a picture last week. Wore an older model Ulysee Nardin Maxi Marine Chronograph and on the way into work I caught it on something and the rubber strap broke right at one of the middle metal links. It is 18 years old but I have never had a high-end rubber strap fail especially since I don't wear them often. Kinda bummed as the watch has a new scratch and the replacement is almost $400 for 4 little pieces of rubber. Until I get it in I can't channel my inner Russian oligarch.

I like Paul. He has made some detailed posts about how watches function and more importantly, fail during saturation diving. It dispelled a lot of watch forum myths about the subject.

I'm currently Panerai-less after a fairly long history with the brand and having owned a number of different references. Thinking about dipping another toe back in with a Radiomir Quaranta.

That is a cool watch. I don't have a 40mm wire lug Radiomir. I have a 42mm 1940 case. I do really like the olive and the blue Quarantas in SS.

For the select few of us that are both F1 and watch nerds...
Rolex Leaving F1
It is funny seeing the Rolex only fan boys / DTS F1 crowd (strong overlap between the two) be so triggered about this
Guess I still think back to Tag being the official timer back in the gold ole days of F1 when I started watching as a kid in the 90s

It better be Tag Heuer that takes over, it would be a shame if LVMH uses Hublot instead, not that I hate Hublot but Tag Heuer is the correct historical fit.

I have never owned a Vostok but sooner or later I will get an Amphibia Radio Room. I think it is a cool watch and I want to take a shot at disassembling and reassembling the 2415 movement. The architecture is so different from the typical Swiss and Japanese movements. Plus I would get to see close up how that janky crown works!

They’re neat watches. For roughly $100 you get a solid movement and a cool history, apparently they’re very easy to mod/work on.

I had a case swap done with my NTH Nacken V1 and had it placed in a V2 case (and took the NTH Amphion from it and put it in the V1 case). When the Nacken came back, I swapped the blue bezel for a stainless one. I really like how it turned out.
