Texas scenery is really underrated

I’ve always thought of Texas as a flat, hot, concrete wasteland with strip malls, service roads, and Mexican restaurants as far as the eye can see.
I am traveling northbound right now on Amtrak’s Texas Eagle somewhere around McGregor, TX, and I have to say I’m very wrong.
San Antonio is a really cool place with the Riverwalk and the Spanish architecture. The wide open expanse in Hill Country with ranches and small towns with early 20th century buildings still intact is very unique. Austin is scenic with the river and greenery, and the rolling hills around the Brazos are picturesque.
Now I still maintain that my former opinion still holds true for the Dallas area and most of Houston.

Excellent. There weren’t enough threads about Texas today.
Thank you for your service.

Hill country is nice. The rest is a flat wasteland.

The Hill Country and far SW Texas has nice scenery
The other 80% is terrible, especially from Midland to the northern panhandle

Bout to say...OP was stating the only placed in Texas that are nice to look at. I work all over South Texas and its a dumpster fire literally. I would say around Gonzalez/Cuero is pretty with farmland, but other than that you got Hill Country. Everywhere else is pretty desolate

Not really. The Hill Country, Big Bend National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and a few other areas are nice, but most of the scenery of Texas is unimpressive. And when you compare the very best of Texas to Montana, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Vermont, Maine, and a bunch of other states, it's very clear that Texas is closer to the bottom than it is the top.
And this isn't hating on Texas. There is a lot to love about Texas.

I'm no Texas apologist but if you can't find beauty in the high plains you aren't looking.
However, I agree large swaths of Texas are just fugly.

I live 20 minutes away from this. Would have to drive eight hours from Nola to get to anything even half as cool.

I took the southern R=route when I moved to Washington, and of course I was crossing at night..the massive western wind farms was pretty cool to see but it wasn't til I got to Utah that I was really impressed with that state.

You passed not 100 yards from my house in Temple.
And I find it funny that you had that though around McGregor of all places.

I think the people that say Texas scenery is weak are either only talking about the populated Eastern half or they are from out West where scenery is more extreme and is everywhere.
I mean, if you come from California, Utah, Idaho, or Colorado you are not at all impressed by Texas Hill Country. Big Bend is really cool but it's a bit out of the way for most.

It’s pretty meh. Big bend and whatnot is nice enough, but it’s like ten hours from civilization. Hill country is wildly overrated, at least on here.
