Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan now appears to back limited “destination” casinos in the state. So far, Texas has forbidden the opening of such commercial gaming properties.
But Phelan, a Beaumont Republican, told reporters this week that he wants gaming properties that “are high quality and that create jobs and that improve the lifestyle of those communities,” the Dallas Morning News reported.
What I don’t want to see is to walk into every convenience store and see 15 slot machines,” Phelan said.
Phelan envisions casinos with concert halls, golf courses, and hotels, the newspaper report said.

Some strong opposition to expanded gambling in Texas remains, however, often based on moral grounds.
In December, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican who presides over the state Senate, said he doesn’t “see any movement on it,” KXAN, a Houston TV station, reported.
Patrick continues to have strong influence over whether expanded gambling could move forward in the Republican-dominated state Senate.

It will happen eventually. My guess is in the next 5-10 years.

That’s a nail in the coffin for Shreveport/Bossier if Texas gets casinos. If they ever shut down Barksdale and Strategic Air Command, this place is frickED.

It's not just a Shreveport issue but sucking on the teat of your neighbor isn't exactly a sound economic strategy. That could change at any minute and is completely out of your control. It would hurt Lake Charles a decent amount too.

This is a shot across Louisiana's bow.

I love states that tout freedom and hate all those god forsaken liberal states who want to take their freedoms away from them.
They’re almost exclusively the ones that make cannabis and gambling illegal because Jesus.

Never happen. LA casinos will bribe whoever it takes to make sure of that. Texas casinos would be great for Texas, but kill everyone but Vegas.

No doubt. The Choctaw nation from OK in particular has been battling this for years.

On WWL radio today they said the tax money LA gets from gaming (remember, gambling is against the state constitution) now exceeds the tax money the state gets from oil and gas.

Damn.
Why would Texas be ok with continuing to send that money to neighboring states? Particularly when the state has become less conservative. It's not their job to prop up the LA economy though

Cause the politicians who decide such things are being bribed to vote against it.

He lives in Beaumont. He’s never driven 30 minutes across the state line? Circle Ks in Louisiana look a lot like the ones in Texas. Neither have 15 slot machines.
No telling how much money flows from his district in Beaumont to the Lake Charles casinos on a daily basis. You’d think he’d like to keep some of that money closer to home.
