Tesla didn't build that. Telsa has received over $5B in grants, loans, and subsidies over a decade, and has yet to turn a profit

So its nice and all that Kauai has lower utility rates, and Tesla is making money off of it. But you and I built it

I think you're missing that this is considered a "monster" for Kauai and because of the storage. The big thing in Hawaii is the utility saying the grid can't handle more PV exporting energy to the grid so now you have to store it. So this farm is "off-grid" and is supplying daytime load as well as nighttime load without hurting the grid. The CVSR is huge but is not storage. A friend of mine just completed a 113 mW farm in CA.

They should put a salt water lake on top a mountain. Racoon Mountain Pump Storage Plant just outside Chattanooga has 4 units each capable of just over 400 for a combined 1600 MW.

That's our battery and it's super effective. Too bad the SJWs would never allow such a thing.

Lots of land devoted to solar with low return on power

All we need now is for them to build about 250,000 of these to power one major city

Same with nuke plants....people think that nuke plants are ticking time bombs ready to blow and shower the country side with fallout. In reality, nuke plants release no emission components into the atmosphere and are dependable as they come when it comes to reliable electricity generation.

This is what's crazy to me. How can anyone who is serious about decreasing fossil fuel emissions hate nuclear? But nuclear is a complete nonstarter with most of the sierra club/greenpeace types. Energy has become such an emotional issue for people on both sides when it is the last thing that should be. It's all just a big math problem that people treat like some kind of ethical/metaphysical issue.

If it's going to be a practical technology in the future, I'm pretty sure the free market would pursue it when necessary. I love the idea of alternative energy, but let the market get there on its own.

of course, I was referring to the buildings being ugly.

We just need to figure out an affordable and safe way to get spent fuel rods off of this planet.

Nuclear and biodiesel are where it's at. We waste so much that could be converted into biodiesel.

Always funny to see how many mirrors are already broken on that thing.
None are broken. They do have to be cleaned though pretty often which is why not ever single one is directed toward the tower.

Companies are literally investing billions upon billions of dollars in solar and wind technologies.

Whomever can develop solar windows that can be used in skyscrapers is going to make $$$$.

The buildings are already there. New building construction would include the new windows. It wouldn't be large scale to power the entire city...or maybe it would be assuming you have enough buildings with them installed.

Hawaii and California can already do solar without tax credits and it still makes sense. Most other parts of the country, maybe not yet. Some places on the east coast and some more west coast have high electric rates, but middle America, no.

These farms are also going on land that isn't being used anyway or the property owner would rather turn some profit out of it as they're not farming it.

Kauai is not getting it for free, they're paying for this project. Tesla did get grants and tax credits for their side but it's not like you are footing Kauai. The federal tax credits are credits against an individual or company's tax liability, it's not some rebate that we all pitch in for.

Not to mention how valuable the real estate is surrounding these cities. They would need substantially more land at an exponential cost.

a step in the right direction.

the Tesla contributions are multi faceted.

I wish I had one of their solar powered roofs on my house. I just put a $6,000 30 yr roof on.

the Israelis have invented solar panels that are roadway parts. your car pushes down on the gadget and it produces electricity.

CA is running two demo projects. My state legislator is championing the project.

I wonder how long they last if a cement truck goes over it.
