I want a Tesla.
I don't know why I haven't dropped down the $1000 for the Model 3 yet but my hope is I can put it off long enough to get the cheaper 3 and not splurge on the S.

One of my dad's friends has the S P100D. It's fire.

Tesla Reliability lags behind its performance
Consumer Reports Tesla S P85D breaks during testing
I like the model S, but they aren't good cars. The technology that makes the car cool actually turns even minor issues into real headaches.
Consumer Reports Tesla S P85D breaks during testing

A new car shouldn't have problems when you’ve owned it for less than a month. Yet Consumer Reports' brand-new $127,000 Tesla Model S P85 D, with the fancy retractable door handles refused to let us in, effectively rendering the car undriveable. (Read "Why We Bought a Tesla Model S.")
After we’d owned the P85 D for a mere 27 days, with just over 2,300 miles on the odometer, the driver-side door handle failed. The door handles in the Model S retract electrically so they rest flush with the sides of the car when they’re not in use. Walk up to the car with the key fob in your pocket, and the handles move out to allow you to grip them.
Driver's door handle is stuck. Except this time, the one on the driver’s door of our P85D didn’t pop out, leaving us no way to open the door from the outside. And significantly, the car wouldn't stay in Drive, perhaps misinterpreting that the door was open due to the issue with the door handle. We have observed other vehicles likewise prohibiting driving with a door open.
We’re far from the first Tesla owners to experience this problem. Our car reliability survey shows that doors, locks, and latches are the biggest trouble areas with Teslas and that the Model S has far higher than average rates of such problems.

I know it sounds weird but if I could have a Tesla it would be the Model X.

If money wasn't an option, I'd certainly choose the X first.

My boss has one. He drives like an old lady, but that car does have a lot of power. The back doors are cool as hell.

I'm surprised at how many people in Jackson have a Tesla. I haven't seen a 3 yet (which this article tells me why
) but I have seen plenty of X's and S's.

High score for performance, horrible for reliability in Consumers Reports.
LINK
Consumer Reports:
quote:
"In terms of any new or redesigned vehicles, we often see a tumble on reliability," Fisher said. "As the years go by, we always see reliability continue to improve" as companies work out bugs and design issues.
"The fact that the Tesla Model S is average at all, is impressive, considering the short life of this company, when you have automakers such as Fiat Chrysler unable to make very conventional cars reliable, the fact that the Tesla Model S is average is a very impressive feat."
Keep em coming

Also their quality sucks. The general public doesn't know this because they will not allow JD Power to access their owner/customer lists. ALL other OEMs that sell vehicles in the USA have given their customer information for JD Power to survey EXCEPT TESLA.
They have the highest brand loyalty out there because of the quality of their product. Go drive one and you will be impressed, I promise. I was going to get a 3 but decided to wait for the model Y.

Shocking, Musk over promises again.
I read a finance article about TSLA about 2 months ago where the author said Tesla has literally never met a single goal Musk has committed to and TSLA loses money on every car they sell. Plus, Tesla has either had to borrow money or issue additional shares of stock every year they've been in business since Musk took over as CEO in 2008 just to meet their payroll.
Yet when I pointed that out on the Money Board I was crucified by the Musk fan boys there who were all agog with the "5,000 Model 3 units will be produced per WEEK by the end of this year" promise he made in the second quarter of this year.
He won't come close to achieving that production goal.
I just don't get it....

They sold zero emissions credits that they obtained to other companies to post that profit. They aren't making money on their cars, at least not yet.

The latest analysts consensus for the Q3/2017 has them losing -$2.00/share.
To answer your question without knowing TSLA's specifics, a company can show a profit without having an operating profit, such as selling a building or other large asset for a profit. Also, companies can accrue tax credits (in effect, counting on tax refunds before they are actually received) for a short-term, such as quarterly, profit. Those types of "profit" do not reflect a sustainable operating profit.
The article I mentioned in my first post above is several months old so maybe there has been a change in TSLA's operating profitability since then.

They are in the same facility that GM and Toyota had a JV that ended a few years ago. But instead of using modern production methods with automated robots etc they are building these manually with virtually no assembly line. But not with skilled workers but cheap imported labor with work visas from Obama that our taxes are paying for. They have so many more workers that they ran out of room in their parking lot yet only producing a fraction of what GM/Toyota did in the same facility.
their dirty little secret.
workers on the line are miserable.
