This sounds pretty shitty on Tesla's part. Glad they sent the update but frick them for limiting it in the first place (unless there's some good reason that I'm missing).
Electronics companies have been software-locking their products for years. My FLIR camera is one example, models within the series have exactly the same harware specs with only the software flashed in to differentiate the available features and resolution. So with a little piece of software I dl'd for free I turned a camera I paid about $1000 for into a version that went for $5000+. Companies that make digital oscilloscopes are famous for doing this.

Kind of scary thinking about the implications this can have in the future when everyone has an electric. Police could potentially shut down your car if you are wanted for something.

Did anyone mention that this is exactly how your internet pretty much works too.
They have already laid down the wiring.
You get the modem, sometimes provided by them.
You only get the speed you pay for, even though they could just "let" you have the higher speed.
I don't see the outrage.
And as someone hinted at, it works both ways. If they only offered the longer range model, some people wouldn't be able to afford it, so instead of just saying "tough shite", they offer a lower cost alternative. I'd also bet there are some real costs associated on their infrastructure between the two versions that may not be readily apparent to the consumer.

Intel used to do the same with their PC microprocessors.. They would sell a full power version, and a cheaper version that was the same chip with the coprocessor disabled.

frick a bunch of glorified, overpriced golf carts with a 200 mile range. Wierdo junk.

They can do that now with Chevy On-Star, Ford's (forget the name), and FCA's uConnect.

Either the 60kWh clients or the 75kWh clients are getting screwed artificially.
Not really. I mean, Fed Ex has sat on packages that arrived early simply because I didn't pay for expedited shipping.

60k or 75k. Same battery.
Just flip switch.
Scam. For shame.

Intel does this with some of their chips.
Copy machines are like this two. Several of the units will be all the same hardware, but you have to pay more for 30 pages/minute vs 20 per minute.

Yes and no. With the internet, there is limited bandwidth. You are balancing multiple consumers. The Tesla is a stand alone situation much closer to the processing chips ppl have mentioned.

How us the 60kWh more affordable then if they use the same things in them? This sounds pretty shitty on Tesla's part.
I'm not sure you interpreted the 60 vs 75 correctly.

So telsa purposely restricts the range of their vehicles? That's kinda fricked up.
It's like a tuning a cars HP. Manufacturers have been doing this for decades. You could buy a $300 ECU to reprogram your 335i and have as much horsepower as an M3.

I bet everyone thinking this is so wrong have never once thought the same about their internet, where as you said, you can go from the cheapest to most expensive internet your provider can give you usually without any hardware upgraded, they just flip a switch...just like Tesla did. THE HORROR!!!

600 mile range on my V8 4x4 that can haul all my gear and belongings.
That's what I want
Get out my way

- Microprocessors
- Copying machines
- Internet
- Receiving packages overnight or 2 day or standard
There's probably countless other examples of things we just accept without realizing it's no different than what Tesla is doing here, but damn that Tesla, what a scam!!!

We can add cable to the list as well.
You mean to tell me I have all the hardware I need to get HBO and Showtime, but the cable company offers a cheaper package without it but could just flip a switch and I could magically have it?
SCAM!!!

Comparing services to hardware is a shitty example. The processors are the best comparison. Cable and internet are shitty ones.
