The part about white people buying slaves fair and square back in the day is about the most uncomfortable truth I think I've heard. Slavery is obviously horrific but it should be the ultimate reminder of how grateful we should be for the men and women who have died to defend our freedom. There are no universal rights. Our rights were all obtained through bloodshed. NOT being a slave means that someone paid/fought for your freedom at some point. Slavery/oppression is the the history of mankind.

Slavery is an ugly part of human history but it was pretty nearly a universal practice. It has only been 35 years since Mauritania officially outlawed slavery - although the practice there and other places around the world continues without the official name.

It doesn't excuse the people who kept slaves from their moral culpability if you understand africans kept african and european slaves, muslims kept slaves, asians kept slaves, and europeans kept slaves. It does however point out the understanding of many americans (that slavery is a thing white people did to black people only here in the US) is a myopic understanding of history.
