What happened to learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through straight memorization? It isn't hard to know that 8 x 9 is 72 because that's just something easy to memorize... But common core idiots will make it so that 8 x 9 = 4 x 2 x 3 x 3. I love simple math. Over complicating something so simple is just, well, counterproductive.

The worst part for me is how my kids school is going back and forth.
Last year, it was all common core, so if you want to be a good parent, you learn the new way to teach. Now, it doesn't matter how they get the result, only the result.
I feel like I'm never on the same page as the school

School needs to be left up to the teachers. If they aren't getting the job done it will come out and the kids can leave to another school. The main thing I want to stress is that not every child learns the same. Some are more visual, some are hands on, some can learn by just reading a text. I think all tools should be used to educate our kids. However I think kids should be tested early on to see what type of critical thinkers they are and then tailor the subject matter to them.

My kids started their first year of public school, so far they have not struggled with learning the common core. I was surprised hearing how bad common core was. I don't care how they learn it just as long as they do.

the math teaches kids to solve the problems in their head, and I like that.

1 part of the CC new Math is actually good in that it presents student with more real life situations. For example, I taught a lesson last week in 6th grade on manipulating variables in equations. The final project for the mini-unit went through a situation where a girl was painting her room and had to find out how much paint she needed. It went through the process of measuring the room, subtracting for Windows's and doors, and even calculating how many paint can she would need along with the cost. I really don't know why people hate it so much.
Real World? I eyeball the room and then head to Home Depot. If I have too much, fine. If too little, I go back.
Real world my arse.

It's higher level thinking. Why wouldn't you want your kid to be exposed to this?
