Interesting, I have looked for books about the civil war in STT and surrounding area but never had any luck. Any that you know of that you would recommend?
I don't think there is much written about the Civil War in St. Tammany Parish. Most of what I learned were from old timers who were the known local historians.
I did find out some of the Madisonville information from The War of the Rebellion: The Official History of the War Between the States. You can search for keywords and see the text of battle reports, etc. that match. Just remember, if you search for Madisonville or Covington to add LA to the end or else you'll get a ton of stuff about Kentucky.
Another good read online is Among the Cotton Thieves by Edward Bacon, who was a soldier in the Michigan Infantry. It was published in 1867 and has a good bit of detail about the Battle of Baton Rouge and other actions eastward, including skirmishes and fights in and around Ponchatoula.
If you can get your hands on a copy of the St. Tammany Parish Historical Society Gazette from the library, it has some stuff about the Civil War in St. Tammany, including an interesing story about one of my ancestors and him obtaining barrels of silver and gold brought up here from some banks in New Orleans.

The HJ Smith museum is really interesting.

I can vouch for that. The store itself has some pretty good stuff, too.

It has many large "economic development districts" with a sales tax rate of 10.5% - making it close to the highest tax rate in the nation. Promoted by Brister and unanimously approved by all current council members with no voter approval.

My great, great grandfather owned the land that is now Abita Springs and laid out the plans for the town. His son built the Longbranch Hotel, and later lost it in a card game. My great grandfather was killed in a shootout in Covington in 1899 after his nephew was killed in an ambush near what is now the intersection of Turnpike and Bennett Bridge Roads. My Dad's uncle built Lake Ramsay and, at one time, owned all of the land surrounding the lake. I've seen some huge bass pulled from that lake.
Unfortunately, in the last 30-40 years and post-Katrina, it's been overrun with transplanted Yankees, Yats, Chalmations, and other undesirables.

There were three Chevrolet Brothers of which the car brand takes it's name.
The first two were born in Switzerland and the third was born in France.
Louis, Arthur & Gaston were their names.
Arthur killed hisself in Slidell in 1946.
They say he was hung...

My grandpa helped build the Hotsy Totsy bar, which was the original name for Lonesome Rd when it was gravel.
Dad's side owned all of the land that is now the movie theater/Chevrolet dealership/CK mobile homes way back before the interstate was there.
For fun, all of the old timers used to ride bikes from Mandeville and Covington out to Abita CC to go swimming.

My dad has a cousin who had a couple of drinking joints between Red Bluff and Ramsay on LA 25. I was too young to drink, but was his designated driver on several occasions. I love that area and the history. My great, great grandfather on my grandmother's side of my family was a Confederate blockade runner on Lake Pontchartrain during the Civil War.

After reading this thread, apparently St Tammany is the Bill Brasky of parishes.

Your grandfather and my uncle worked together against the invasion of the yankees.
Great greats that is.
Also the largest brahman breeder in the country if not the world at one point was headquartered in STT.
