If you plan on having kids, go about a half mile further down Old Perkins, cross over Bayou Manchac, and get into Ascension Parish.

Otherwise, plan on paying for private schools for a decent education in East Baton Rouge Parish.
This is great advice.

Stay in the Old Perkins area of AP, and you'll have all the benifits of Baton Rouge without the negatives.
There are several nice neighborhoods off of Bluff Road and Swamp Road.
Manchac Harbor on Hwy 42 is a good neighborhood, but driving Hwy 42 is going to be a traffic nightmare.

the private schools in BR are far better than the public schools in AP, which in turn are far better than their counterparts in BR.

if your wife is a Dr., you can afford the private schools. you should do that.

Ascension Parish public schools grouped as a whole include the poor perfoming schools in the cities of Gonzales and Donaldsonville.

If he and his wife reside in the Prairieville school district, future children would be attending Dutchtown High School (free tuition).

Other than Catholic High and Episcopal (annual tuition $10,000 and $16,000 respectively), which EBR private schools do you consider to be that much better than Dutchtown?

Parkview?

The truth is, most EBR residents who pay Parkview tuition are doing so to keep their children away from the much more segregated Woodlawn HS.

for a public school, dutchtown is pretty good. however, my experience with grads of both would say parkview is much more likely to produce kids who go to college and more successful adults. i don't think dutchtown is a bad school at all. i know several great teachers there. i think the problem is more of the environment than anything. dutchtown never struck me as a place where it was cool to be the smart kid

Perkins Rowe and Gonzales? Buy a house in university club instead.

Not to mention a nice 300k plus home in Dutchtown school district is going to also be great for the local plant economic growth that is being projected in and around St. Gabriel and Gonzales area.

By the time my daughter goes to high school, there will be another public option or two besides Dutchtown.

I wouldn't consider anything off of 42 until the work is done there...total mess for the next few years probably.

I would say Baton Rouge High, UHigh, and Dunham are all better than Dutchtown.

Baton Rouge High - great public school, but very limited admission

U High - $5,000 tuition, VERY limited admissions that is usually filled from student attrition.

Dunham - $14,000 tuition

OK, so I forgot a few....
