Covington is what you make of it. It is undoubtedly one of the most forward culturally of the small towns of Louisiana. I grew up going to the symphony, theater, and always had exposure to art and cultural happenings. It is not, however, a hot bed of kicking nightlife. So if you have a family, or don't need to go out every night it can work quite well, but you have to entrench yourself in the community to really enjoy and partake.
Covington is also home to a large equestrian and farming economy, so it has a population of erudite artists and no frills workers. It has always existed in this capacity. Much more refreshing IMO than what Mandeville has become. I find that actually having a downtown kicks it up a notch over Mandy and Madisonville. It will always be home and always the best place on the Northshore. I can actually go to St. Johns, listen to the traffic, and meet some interesting people who are no way stereotypical of small town Louisiana.

We have tried several times to go out for a late dinner. And I mean 9:00 on a weekend, and have had to drive around to find a place that wasn't already shutting down for the night. We aren't big chain people but we end up at the chains because apparently Mandeville goes to bed at 10 pm on a Saturday. That's boring.

You sound like you lead an exciting life. BASE jumping, weekend trips to Vegas, bear hunting in Alaska?

Yeah Mandeville does shut down when the street lights come on.

I agree with this. Mandeville is SO painfully white bread. It's like a town full of one type of person. In Covington, I have met different people. And that's something I enjoy. I'm not a keeping up with the Joneses kind of girl, and I like meeting interesting people and seeing/doing interesting things. They are butted up right next to each other, but there's a vast difference to the feelings of Cov and Mandeville.

I think Mandeville and Covington both suck compared to the Southshore. If you want suburban living, just live in Metairie. You get everything Mandeville and Covington have to offer except you're just minutes from the city. You can try to rationalize it all you want, but when you boil it down...the entire Northshore is a very boring place to live.

I said it was boring if you read my comments. But it's a good place to raise a family, and it has what my family in particular needs that the South shore does not. I think NO is the best city on earth. But it's missing what I need, and therefore I will never live there. This isn't a NS/SS argument. He asked about living in Covington. Get off your high horse.

This makes your opinion irrelevant and is really laughable. Who is saying the Northshore wins? I don't find it as exciting as New Orleans, but different people have different needs.

better schools
st tammany public schools are very overrated and the south shore's private and charter/magnet schools are much, much better than the north shore's.

Metairie can fulfill every need that Covington can. They both provide safe, suburban living. One is just closer to New Orleans.

Covington is not nicer than Metairie. There are completely shitty parts of Covington. Have you ever been to that ghetto by the Covington courthouse?

Not my family's. I'd really like to know the answer to the age question as well.

Have you driven past the hundreds of shitty, run down apartments that make up much of Metairie?
