I think you mean DeBakey. World renowned heart surgeon born in Lake Charles.

People from there think it's the next great metropolis with a vibrant culture. They are delusional.

People not from there think it's an absolute dump. They are assholes.

Truth is somewhere in the middle.

It definitely hasn't recovered from Hurricane Laura in many respects which is unfortunate.

So they have a restaurant called the Bekery and it's in Walnut Grove. What he's saying is they're connecting nelson/casinos toward that.

Debakey drive is right around there so that's what you're probably thinking

No, I mean “The Bekery” bakery near the port.
DeBakey Dr is near St. Pat’s/shell beach drive, which is a decent area

Barbe High School Baseball facilities are insane! Better than a lot of colleges.

LINK

Amazing that this is a "Public" school.

That's all I got.

Good Areas, Bad areas. Maps are very helpful. No surrounding areas (Sulphur, etc.). Looking for info about Lake Charles or at least on the very outskirts.

Depends on your age/family situation. If you’re a single, young professional, then LC isn’t for you. For a place to raise a family, it’s not bad. Private schools aren’t too expensive and St. Louis has broken ground on an amazing new high school that will open in the 27-28 school year. If you like the outdoors, fishing is plentiful. Downside, and it’s a big one, is the area’s vulnerability to hurricanes.

Southwest of 210 are da nicer neighborhoods (Greyood, Country Club, Nelson Rd, Holly Hill, Lake Street) besides around da Bekery (bakery) and Shell Beach Drive. Downtown is nice to visit if there’s an event or Sunday walk. The city parks are actually nice. There’s a lot of projects underway such as a bridge connecting north Nelson road to the Bekery area, as well as a boardwalk/wharf area that will include Crying Eagle Brewery and children’s museum on the water south of 10 bridge. All in all, lots of potential for a city. However, hurricane Laura/Delta absolutely destroyed the city and will takes years to get back to where it was pre-COVID/hurricane. I heard at once this place was one of the fastest growing economies in the US. Not sure if that’s true, but I wouldn’t doubt it given the LNG/plant projects. If you’re a single guy or no ties to city, there’s better places. But if you have to move here, there are worse places.

This is what I was looking for, thanks.

Bekery/Restaurant Calla area we like a lot.

The idea is to be there to start a family potentially. Some ties to the area, and I have siblings in Houston. I also like the idea of being close to Houston in the event of needing major medical care due to an illness.

I liked the downtown area as well when we went.

If you don't mind, here are some follow up questions.

Best Sports Bar? Or is it more of an area where most people are going to be at their families houses for games?

Any running clubs?

How safe would it be to run Shell Beach Dr and around downtown?

Are businesses slow to reinvest due to what happened with Laura/Delta?

How is the insurance situation?

Local Quirks?

Once TX legalizes gambling/sports betting, Lake Charles will be considerably different….and not for the best. I give it 2 more Texas Legislative sessions, and it will finally pass.

Are you hell bent on LC?

North of there is Ragley/Moss Bluff... you can spread out some and not be south of LC in a flood zone.

Sam Houston is a good high school. So is South Beau just a little north.

Westlake High is small and the rec dept there is second to none. 2 free rounds of golf a week with cart rentals if you are part of the rec. Waterpark fixing to open. Free gym. We go there pretty much every day. During Laura we never lost water or natural gas. I could have hot showers.

In LC Barbe or St Louis will be where you want to be. SJ welsh is massive as is Barbe. I went to Barbe and it's changed a lot in size.

Downtown is fine. We've been at the park with kids at night late a lot and never had an issue ever. It does depend on holiday times as you can end up with extra groups that come out when there are extended breaks from school and work.

Cost of living is inflated some with all the plants. Same token there is some insulation from the maladies of other areas during a downturn economically.

Raising a family it's good. We can hit Galveston, Houston, LSU easily enough for a quick trip. Lots of fishing. Deer leases are around. Toledo Bend is also a short getaway.

There is plenty to eat.
Lunas
Darrell's
Seafood Palace
Wasabi Sushi
Joes pizza and pasta
Pujo St Cafe
McFarlands
Casa Mañana (Tex Mex)
Mazens for steaks.
Cousins for a Ribeye Burger and full mix drinks.

There are more.

The Family Fest in May is fun music wise. There were other concerts as well at the amphitheater around that time frame. The Arts and Humanities has a schedule. They do a great job.

Downtown at Sundown every Friday n June is fun.

Movie under the stars at the parks every Friday (it rotates parks) in April and October. The kids loved it when they were little. We still try to make one in the spring and fall.

There is a lot to do now family wise.

If you visit, Mazen’s is delicious, for more than just steaks. All their seafood dishes have been really good & those fried asparagus.

Mostly the chains, Buffalo Wild Wings, Walk Ons, or in the casino. Or Darrell’s.

Yes several. Folks run downtown and shell beach all the time. Always activity.

Insurance is a major problem for our area right now.

LC great area to raise a family.
