On a scale from waste landfill to pregnant redneck woman in a tube top and cutoffs smoking menthols, how trashy is this place?

If you like brown water and gas platforms, you hit the jackpot.

Lived in Galveston as a kid.

If you like lying on the beach like a fatty go to the Florida panhandle where the waves are like a small pond.

If you like body surfing, Galveston was great.

Depends on the your proximity to another beach area. If you live closer to gulf shores/Pensacola, do that. If you don't, or don't have the time to drive there, Galveston is a fine alternative. Drive West on the island to find the less touristy spots away from Pleasure Pier and all the hotels. We went to the state park beach last month and it was fine, just hide your beer. It's just a beach, so don't set your expectations too high.

You can't go there and expect it to look like Florida beaches. With that being said, I love Galveston. It is what you make of it.

IMO, Texas beaches become nicer the further south you go.

Brown hard sand and muddy water. The Strand is a lot nicer than expected, but I had pretty low expectations. Family friends that live in Galveston actually love it there, and have a few friends with beach houses. If you don't go expecting a Hawaiian get away you can have a great time, but as others have said, if you're close to the bama/florida beaches that's what I would suggest.

Water sucks. Sand sucks. Bars suck. People are trashy. It’s worse than Biloxi as far as beaches go:

Go to a beach south of the seawall. There are public access points south of the town that are nice.

I don't think Galveston has ever really fully recovered from Hurricane Ike in 2008, but it is a fine place to go. The town just had a lot more life in it pre-2008.

Comparable to Mississippi beached sand and water wise. Galveston usually has bigger waves though.

What do you mean? The beaches are a lot better once you get away from the seawall.

It's more than just your opinion, it's a fact of life.

Don't expect white sand. From time to time the water gets fairly clear, but often it's chocolate milk. Seawall sucks, east beach is nicer. If you head south of the seawall there are "pocket beaches" that fill up fast. We always head to San Louis Pass (SLP). Don't expect much and you won't be let down.

It’s in Galveston and I guess you can call it a beach.
