Went to their website and I saw "Get Something, for Nothing". On of the first things my dad taught me was... There is no such thing as getting something for nothing, you are going to pay for it one way or the other so right there I wouldn't trust them. But that's where I stopped looking,,

Google search says it's a multi-level marketing company. That usually means a bunch of bullshite.

Like many MLM companies, it's probably a serviceable product and a dead end as a business venture.

I'm seeing mixed reviews. Some people hate them, some people love them.

I used them at the last place I rented. No complaints.

Well, every energy provider in Texas is basically a marketing company. The companies that actually generate power such as Oncor don't sell direct to consumers.

MLM companies have made many friendships an awkward relationship.

Their product isn't even theirs. They don't produce, ONCOR, TXU, etc etc does. All they do, literally, is rebill. Power is power. Their service is to bill you and answer the phone. If your service is interrupted, who is on it? The Producer(s), not Ambit.

So what's the point of dealing with them?

Ambit typically offers customers one or two-year fixed-rate contracts for utilities. After the contracts expire, services may automatically switch to variable-rate plans unless customers manually renew the fixed-rate plans. In some cases Ambit's variable-rate plans are substantially more expensive. This has prompted complaints and lawsuits from consumers, and an investigation from New York Public Service Commission. In December 2015, the Department of Public Service in New York announced that it had secured refunds for 1,566 Ambit customers, totaling nearly one million dollars.[12]

Lower KWh and a locked in rate. If Texans aren't shopping provider rates by now they're stupid. Dereg can save a lot of money over time. And guess what? You can change at any time. If Green Mountain has a better deal per KWh than Ambit, you can switch. And so on. Seriously, the only difference is the paper the bill is sent on, not the actual electricity.

Your provider does (Ambit) through the producer (Like Oncor).

Oncor (in DFW) I believe. I know Oncor owns the meters and infrastructure to deliver the electricity.

But yes, whoever you choose as your electric company is just a middleman.

It sounds like Ambit requires one or two year contracts, and they've been criticized for high connection and disconnection fees too.

The new provider will pay any cancellation fee as an incentive. They all will.
