Yeah, I must be a horrible teacher too! Had a student unable to take a department-issued final exam because she tanked one of her essays (98/300pts) and it dropped her grade below what was required just to take the exam. When I told her the bad news, she had the gall to say she wanted to appeal her grade because she felt she was messed over on that essay she failed. Fact was, she turned it in over a week late, didn't include the required outside sources, didn't follow the specs of the paper (and did exactly what I told the class NOT to do), and messed up a few other things. And one of my advisors, when I told him all of this, was like "touch shite, but she fricked up."
The moral of the story, OP, is to do the work and earn your grade. And if a class, as the one you're describing, will determine keeping or losing TOPS, fricking do the work to earn the grade you need and don't bitch when you don't get it.

So much whiney bullshite about grades lately. My last 2 semesters at lsu in engineering we had professors curving DOWN because ABET was coming to visit soon and the professors got a directive from the department that there needed to be as close to a normal distribution of course grades as possible. One professor actually changed his grading scale unfavorably while the others made their finals hard as frick to make people drop letter grades on purpose.
If you're in danger of losing TOPS over a B, you're probably a freshman or maybe a sophomore and you've been making mostly C's in your classes. For some reason, getting this B is critical though. I find that funny.

i just kinda go with the flow, in my electrical engineering courses 90% of the professors don't use moodle
, so i just look at the syllabus and how the curves pan out and the final grade postings are crazy because i don't know what i get until it's posted, so really in my mind if i got an A it's an A and a B is a B and so on... there's no 89.9% that i ever deal with
, my goals are be at the class average or higher on all tests and work, so i go to all my classes and do the work that's asked of me, and do well and i'm happy where im at

If this was a math class I wouldn't round up your grade either since 79.70 rounded up would be 80 not 0.30

Yes, it does suck that you were extremely close to receiving a B in the class. However, you are not entitled to a higher letter grade because you were close to a B.

shite I had a professor who lost my final exam, I had A's all semester in a class about federal law enforcement taught by a former FBI agent. Probably the best professor I had. Grads came out and I got a C. I email him asking what was the deal. He told me to come in and talk about. Turned out my exam was never even graded by some idiot TA. He said don't worry you will get your A. Months later the grade never changed when I got back from summer break. Went into the sociology dept to talk to him and turned out dude never changed it bc he had a heart attack. Needless to say I was fricked. I may have been a frick up in other classes but the ones involving my major I never got below a B. Just had to cut my losses and move on.

Cause rounding an 89.4 to a 90 is not rounding, it's just giving points away for fun

That's what I have always known as well. UT did this thing where they built a bit more into it with B+, C+, and D+ though. I have heard they added - grade letters and went to the 10 point scale now though.

Im not at LSU but I always round any decimal up. 3 reasons:
1. If I don't it's like I'm taking those points away.
2. I'm self aware enough to realize I'm not a perfect grader. My tests have a fair amount of subjectivity in them so that a round up from any decimal minimizes the effects of any grading mistake over the semester.
3. To avoid student complaints.
Now I don't tell them I do this because then I would get questions about an 88.8

The instructor should remember life as a student, cut the class some slack and round up the grades, but life isn't always fair and the OP will likely be better off knowing he shouldn't rely on rounding.

I also always made sure to try during the semester to stay as high as possible above the borderline so that I wasn't depending on my final exam grade for my overall grade.

I graduated with 197 hours, and about half of those grades were appeals or smooth talking.
I'm sorry, but if you can't talk your way or bullshite enough for a teacher to found decimal points to help you, you ain't tryin hard enough.

Hey, I didn't say I was 100% successful!
but putting in the work during the semester did reduce my final exam stress a lot in most cases. I just assumed if I was borderline that the final exam wouldn't do me any favors. And I was right about that most of the time.
