We cannot go to Walmart in shorts, no make-up, and a pony-tail because we might run into a student and parent and wind up having a parent-teacher conference in the cereal aisle. Or a student might see a bottle of wine in our cart and when Monday comes, we hear students saying making jokes, like Ms. So and So is a wino, or Ms. So and So, you didn’t listen to the DARE lady.

Sounds like she's very self conscious in regards to her appearance. She'll probably frick one of her students- that'll make her feel better!

bullshite. I wouldnt enjoy it, but there is little doubt that most people in other professions couldnt handle teaching.

Sickness. We can’t get sick and stay home — at least not without guilt. When many people miss work, a desk is empty or a register stays closed. We have 30 or so souls who need to learn. Somebody has to do a sick teacher’s job, and that somebody is either a sub or a teacher who gives up preparation time to cover the class.

She sure does have a high opinion of her profession.

We have all heard it — and to be honest, we are sick of it. Sure, we get summers “off.” I should not need to mention that during that time we attend workshops, plan lessons and rewrite curriculum we rework to meet changing standards, but, apparently, I do. Here are some things people may not realize about the lives of teachers.

ETA: My sister in law is a teacher. That chick was at our apartment everyday in the summer using our rooftop deck. Workshops my arse.

There's nothing worse than education majors on social media. After seeing what their finals and semesters consist of I'd argue they're not even doing real college work.

Education majors are consistently the dumbest. Second dumbest? Business majors.

Both useless majors that should be scrapped.

And yeah the no summer off mantra from teacher is complete bullshite. My wife probably spends about 1 or 2 days over the summer doing training. And she doesn't do lesson planning until like a week before school starts. She's not planning the whole damn year out. She'll spend about an hour or two and knock a week or two out during the school year. Plus they often take turns within her team doing the lesson plans.

I don't know if high school is any different. My wife teaches elementary so she has the same kids all day. Thus she has to prep for the entire day. With high school you probably only have to plan for a 45 or 90 minute block a day and teach it multiple times so it probably evens out.

It's more of a "bashing whiny teacher" thread.

My point was clear. Like cops and other professions, people like to "hate on" teachers until they need them.

Then there is social media, which has become a dangerous land mine. You have a bad day or a bad customer? No problem; many of you can rant online. If teachers do that, we get pulled into the office for our negativity. We even get chastised if a friend posts an inappropriate post on our page. Even with privacy settings, things get out, so if it is not PG, it doesn’t go on my page. Everyone says we have freedom of speech, but anything can be taken out of context and lead to a dismissal.

Wow, what a travesty. Besides the fact that the teachers I am friends with post all kinds of crazy stuff, this is a dumb complaint. I don't use social media as a journal, not because I am scared of getting fired, but because I am not stupid or an attention whore. And I hope this idiot complaining about freedom of speech isn't a civics teacher.

I can guaran-damn-tee teachers don't spend their entire summer doing this shite. I can also guarantee they have AT LEAST 5 weeks out of the summer to do jack shite unless they coach football or teach marching band.

I know many teachers that make this statement a lie.

56k is far from menial and that was the average in 2013. That is 56K without a full time summer job.

Not top shelf but well above the majority of people in the US.
