My wife's school is what I would call fairly affluent overall, most of the neighborhoods that are around there are $150-250K homes.
And they have about 25% on free lunch, in the county the average is about 50%, and some schools 80%, and there are still plenty of those stories, even at her school.
She buys nabs and stuffs them in some kids backpacks on Friday so they will have something to eat over the weekend, including some for brothers and sisters. That's every week.
Now, the reason for most of this is exactly what you would expect, but it's not the kids fault.

I wish my teacher knew how to hook up electricity to the bad kid's chairs and when they get the little minor small insignificant hardly noticeable attention getting zap, say "God is watching you".
