I'm in my mid twenties. My junk of shite from high school is about to shite the bed. I make 3000+ a month before taxes and have decent credit. Somewhere in there. Math is a bugaboo for me. I don't have a lot to put down. I also plan on selling my car out right because I won't get shite on the trade in. How do I tell them I only want to pay 400-450 a month on a note. Also. I want to get a truck. I'm also not opposed to buying used I just don't want to get something with 80k miles on it.

Eta: credit score is 660. Jesus frick

I wouldn't ever disclose what you're willing to pay monthly

Do NOT tell them what you can afford each month. For all they know grandma is gonna pay your note. Work on a price you can afford, then worry about the length of the loan. There are online calculators you can use to figure out the numbers. Know your shite before you go.

If they ask "How much of a note are you looking to pay?", you should turn around and walk out the door.

Only buy at 0% interest and at the end of the month of a model year blow out sale.

If this isn't a troll... then your real question should be: "Teach me about credit scores."

I'll help start that one.

Why not? I tell them every time what I want my note to be. I tell them what I'm paying now and what I want to pay. I also tell them I want no money down 0% interest. I make it clear that I will be buying a truck somewhere. We start there and work our way towards making a deal.

But I already have the truck picked out. This is the truck I want. This is where we start. Then we go from there.

BTW, I buy a new truck every 2 years so always have a decent trade

You don't. If you tell them how much you are willing to pay a month they will frick you. You will end up financing a car for 6-7 years.

You figure out what the most you are willing to pay for the car, the actual sales price, and you don't go beyond that.

Start below it.

Look at the money board and find Will Cover's post about it.

That is not how you figure out what you can afford.

Find a good deal on a vehicle you like that you can pay off quickly.

A 5yr note with 10% interest on $18,000 is $382. If you pay an extra $75 per month you will pay it off in 4 years. Not counting anything you can put down up front and after you sell your car.

Having a car note is a great way to waste tons of money throughout your life.

Simple.

Find what you want.
Decide how much you want to pay.
Offer it.
You win or lose.
Go next place, wash rinse repeat.
