Talk about a time you found the ability to finally forgive someone

Years ago a good friend of mine killed himself over a girlfriend of his who cheated on him and got pregnant. It goes so much deeper than her just cheating and getting pregnant, though, but I'll spare y'all the tldr version.

Anyway, the girlfriend was someone I had known my entire life and I didn't forgive her for what she did for years. Then finally one day I just realized that I was only hurting myself by not letting go. The entire time I held that resentment toward her I found that getting over his death was one of the hardest things to do. Once I forgave her, in my heart, I felt so much better.

What's the OT's story of forgiveness?

It is centered around a topic that is extremely political and controversial so I won't go there here.

Why would you start the topic if you were unwilling to talk about it?

I held on to hatred of two people for many years. As I got older I realized that they probably didn't even know how much I hated them. I was finally able to understand that I was doing myself more harm than harm to them by holding onto the hate. I am very happy that I was able to let it go.

A very wise person once told me that holding onto hatred for a person is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.

I've heard that too and that's 100% true.

I could have because yes, that's what happened. But it goes a lot deeper than just that and I won't go into all those details.

I've forgiven Derek Dooley for 3 years of ineptitude and for making me waste the first two years of my college career watching shitty football. I just realized that he was never cut out for the job and at least he fessed up to his mistakes (for the most part, aside from ruining some recruiting relationships).

I haven't forgiven Botch Jones yet. frick that guy.
