I think people are just underestimating the stress which is what made it such a difficult shot more than the distance.

Same reason why there are plenty of examples of officers emptying there pistols and missing suspects at point blank range.

Not that this makes it the same because there is not substitute for adrenaline but you guys that think it is so easy. Go to the range, do some running, push ups, etc to get your heart rate up. Then take a shot at a moving target.

338 was only talked about because someone posted the rifles used by the seat team. 308 KMW Sentinel and 338 Accuracy International.

Someone then went full retard.

I agree with you. The longest LEO sniper shot was like 180 yards.

I don't disagree with any of that.

I think most people, myself included, had a different initial visual image of the shot taken by the officer.
( Hathcock-like, still, not moving)

I've done that and more. 100 yards is literally nothing for an M4. Hitting a man sized target at 100 even if he's moving isn't that difficult. You don't even have to lead a moving target at 100. MAYBE if the target is at an all out sprint, which I doubt he was, and even then your point of aim would still be on the target.

In that case I retract my previous post.

My apologies for not reading the full thread.

Did they ever say how many shots the sniper made... was it 1 shot 1 kill?

Say you were at that gas station and witnessed this dude shooting police officers.

If you had the means and weaponry in your vehicle, are you engaging him?

I would have to ABSOLUTELY have the drop on him, and a clear shot.

This would worry me. Especially now.

Here is how I imagine it went down:

The police sniper got the call. At that point, he went full auto, mentally. He has been expecting this since the demonstrations started and has mentally prepared for the moment. The years of training kick in and all he is thinking about is taking out a target.
The noise of "officers down, armed shooter, etc" may cross his mind briefly, but he is stone cold and thinking about getting set up quickly and getting a kill shot. Breathing and target acquisition are all second nature, as he has physically and mentally prepared for this moment for years. The excitement of the moment is turned into hyper focus.
If he ever got the shakes, it was after the shot when the adrenaline dump comes.
I am not a sniper, but do a bit of shooting. I do work in an area of human performance that is very stressful and understand how you deal with it to gain maximum human performance. Talent plus repetitive training is the key.

Was it confirmed to be a sniper or a SWAT officer? Many SWAT guys are still in uniform patrol and don't ride in on a bearcat.

He had just arrived on scene. He shouldn't have been uncomfortable yet. .... Just full of adrenaline.

I'll take nothing away from what he did. I wish I could shake the hand of the person that did this.

As far as the shot goes we don't know the persons experience level. I've met 2 snipers that would make that shot offhand. If he had that experience and training that shot would be easy. Lesser experience and the stuff that comes along with that makes it harder of course.

Some have debated the caliber used. Lots of experience on my own 100 yard range indicates virtually no difference between .308 vs. larger flatter shooting rounds on the center mass of a man sized target. Open sites on a .308 would be an easy shot for a practiced shooter under stress free environment.

I only read the last page so forgive me if this has already been said.

Once again I say congrats to the SWAT team shooter and hope they give him a big bonus. Without that shot there could have been more loss of life.

No biggie.

This many pages, things get lost in translation.

I think everyone agrees that LSP, BRPD, and EBRSO have all performed in a outstanding manner, even before this latest tragedy.
They have handled a very difficult few weeks in a professional, organized manner and their responses, both to the initial threat and in relaying information, should serve as a model for other departments.

Not sure, tbh.

Kinda sounded like it, although I would think he'd put a couple more in.

I agree 100%. They had to send in out of towners to disrupt BR.

i dont know if this has been mentioned but the LSP chief said the BRPD SWAT officer shot through obstruction of the building and shot through 2 windows of the building to hit the perp. So IMO 100 yards, moving target, through windows is pretty impressive.

Exceedingly impressive given the stress of the situation.
