Are the attendants stupid, or were they in on it?

Dallas police say the suspects went inside and asked for $5 worth of gas, but instead of only pumping what they paid for, the owner said they pried open the front panel of Pump #18 and disabled the manual shut off switch.
This meant gas would continue to flow freely until the pump was put back on the handle. The owner said a line of cars came to Pump 18, receiving free gas. This continued for roughly 90 minutes.
The surveillance video shows the suspects popped open the hood and trunk of their cars, which were parked in between Pump #18 and the cashier. The owner said they did this to block the cashier’s view.
The owner said the thieves came to his gas station Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, using the broken pump during the entire weekend before the stolen gas was discovered.

i mean most people pay with card. idk how their registers are set up but maybe it isnt easy to see if someone has paid at the pump on the computer or maybe its a busy gas station if it has 18 pumps

I assume the gas being used doesn't show up inside but they should have picked up on the line of cars queing up at the same pump

I see more and more people paying cash for fuel lately, maybe they're casing the joints?

Maybe the OWNER should go check his pumps every day. While he is at it, he could dump out the old stinky window washing water and empty the trash.

Before they made you pre pay you could fill your tank and just lay the nozzle on the ground and drive off. It didnt register until someone puts it back in the holder. I know a few people that did this in high school until one got caught

They have no grocery stores near their homes. They need the gas to travel for groceries.

Saw some white trash with a 97 Grand Prix do this once. I was on my way in so told the clerk but they didn't seem to care much.
