Is it? I have 3,200 sq ft and a single 2-ton unit the cools the house perfectly well. It is a well designed and properly sized zoning setup.

This can't be in LA. No fricking way a 3200 sq ft home is being cooled by a 2 ton unit.

I have a 2 ton unit for my bonus room

So what do you recommend? I suspect improper insulation is a problem for many people. Would you recommend they have attic checked and have it blown into the attic? Seems more insulation could help when we are thinking it’s our unit that is the issue. Thanks.

Yeah, that space would easily warrant a 5-ton in Louisiana.

I mean, I have quite a bit more house and my utilities, all in, average about $600 a month. That's elec/water/sewer/garbage/gas - the whole magilla.

Everything except comms, of course. No koi pond, but there is a cement pond with a heated spa, a sauna (that I use a lot) and other things.

You're talking about a single month almost $1000 just for electricity and water. All in got close a couple of times during a heatwave, but never over with much more house.

Get a smaller house. You don't need 3200 sq ft.

You need that levelized billing.

Too many details missing here.

What is your net rate per kWh? Just take your bill total and divide by kWh usage.

Where are you located? I'm gathering maybe Houston?

As others have said, windows, insulation, etc matter. Given that you have a 2 ton AC for a two story home, I'm guessing this was one of those most-SF-for-least-$ tract built houses by DR Horton or KB?

My last 2800 SF house in Texas had two AC units. It was tract built, but by one of the better builders. Bills were nowhere near close to that with 4 of us and we kept it COLD.

Current house is >4k SF and has a 800 SF detached shop with its own AC, and I have never paid over $360, average $220 (electric heat), and that includes the Snowpocalypse damage charges.

Just checked...

3 units. 4,600 sf house + 3 car AC'd garage and a pool = 4,645 kwh for June.... $732.

I've been meaning to get a VSP for the pool but haven't gotten around to it. Supposed to be significantly more energy efficient

I don't know if this helps you or not - I changed the major A/C components (including upgrading to dual speed compressor) and it didn't drop very much. The next year, I changed out all the old pool stuff with a new main VSP and it was quite noticeable - like $75 to $100/mo or thereabouts, on average.

YMMV and it could be a coincidence with fuel charges, etc.

This tracks. I was quoted $2,300 for VSP last wk and he mentioned breakeven is usually 18 months or so (inclusive of $250 rebate from cleco for VSP installs)

My tiny house is usually around $250 in the summer. Your house is twice the size of mine so that’s about right.

Take a look at the vast differences in rates for June 2025 in LA for 5000 kwh. Examples:

Cleco $775.05
Entergy $576.63
Washington-St. Tammany $509.43
