That's just electricity? I ask, because mine is a utility bill that is electricity, water, gas, sewer. $563 for just electricity is as high as eagle pussy

I have levelized billing but if I didn't my main house would be around $500+ during the summer and the guest house would be about $150

Between both meters, I only pay $380 per month year around thanks to levelized billing. Much better than worrying about spikes.

That's 3 a/cs and 3 electric water heaters too.

ETA: We have a water well and are just outside city limits so no ciy sewer to pay for so overall my utilities aren't terrible.

So you looking at $1k on utilities? Do you have an old AC unit? It might be pulling more electricity than it should.. And you might want to check to see if you have a water leak anywhere.

Well...yeah. with your family size do you really need to cool 3200 square feet? Just block off the vents in rooms you don't use. Keep in mind that during the summer when you cook your a/c is having a fight with your stove. We don't cook stuff that requires the stove to run a long time during the summer.

My family is the same size and my summer entergy bill is $140 bucks. I only cool the rooms the 3 of us use.

I had BREMCO bills of $350-$400 in the early to mid 80s for a while.

I think they had the highest rates in the country at that time.

Tell me more, upstairs is having a tough time cooling I’m thinking of shutting off vents down stairs.

One unit house, we only realistically use 3 rooms

We have parents who come stay few months at a time. And yes we regret owning a big house. Doesn’t make sense

The rates you pay per kwh probably varies some throughout the year. And rates can be higher in the summer due to demand and natural gas costs.

So, just stating your bill amount is not the best measure.

You have to look at your usage. It is listed in kwh. For $563 power bill, you would have to be using about 4000 kwh. That is a huge amount.

3 summers ago, our upstairs unit was dying and it literally ran 24/7 to keep up. We even ran a window unit to help the upstairs central AC. We never had used anywhere near to 4000 kwh.

Yeah, my utility bill which also includes water, gas and sewer is usually in the $220s during the summer. I had a water leak last August and my bill was just over $300. For him to be paying $500 for just electricity.. Something is going on. He might come out better putting a window unit somewhere.

Check into your insulation.

You might to add some spray in insulation to help make it easier to keep the house cool

You could watch all the TV you can muster and cook for the whole block without running your AC and you'll save a fortune...

Heat rises. The second floor is going to be the hardest to cool in the summer. I don't even bother using our second story during the summer...Basically just storage.

Any room we don't occupy...isn't getting cooled in the summer.

Your water bill is nuts. Have you ever considered a well. Long term that would save you a frick ton. I fill a huge pool with ours and I haven't put any money into the well in years.

During the winter I heat with lp and it costs me 300 bucks for the whole winter. Its way cheaper than paying for electricity.

From what I understand ACs are designed to keep things 20 degrees cooler than it is outside. At 72 its probably running all day right?

with one unit and 2 stories, you should have manual dampers near the furnace/air handling unit where the supply duct separates for downstairs and upstairs. Always use those dampers to adjust temperatures per floor. Do not use supply vent dampers because you add static pressure to the branch runs which increases duct leakage and wasted cooling. The manual dampers direct the air where it needs to go w/out those leaks.

Typically in summer you are going to want 80% or more of the air going upstairs. In winter, you'll have to experiment to figure the best damper settings.
