Cactus is cacti, alumnus is alumni, platypus is platypi, and octopus is octopi, so why isn’t walrus spelt walri when plural?

The -i suffix is plural for Latin nouns ending in -us

Walrus isn't Latin, it's Germanic and only by coincidence does it end in "us"

Isn’t German derived from Latin?

I'm sure you're being daft. German is Germanic. Latin is Italic.

No. Completely separate.

English has a ton of Latin because of Roman influence and because the Normans took over in 1066 and for a few centuries forced the English to speak their form of French (derived from Latin)

Latin languages are Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian.

There are others that branch out, like Catalan Spanish. But the Latin languages are the romance languages.

Nice link, will give me something to listen to at work on Monday.

I'm into soccer and listened to an American and Brit explain the different terms we use and where they came from. Very interesting.

A). Not all Latin nouns are made plural with an -i stem. If it is fifth declension, for example, the plural would be walra.

B). Walrus comes from a Dutch word. You wouldn’t apply Latin grammar rules anyway.

ETA. Genro beat me too it and said it better. Hats off.

Well, the Germanic tribes and the Romans didn’t really get along too good.

How about radii for radius and bonii for bonus. We had a Geometry teacher that gave us bonii points if we got all our radii correct.

Depends on Greek or Latin root. And Plural of Octopus is octopuses because it has a Greek root.

LOL, why don't you worry about spelling words correctly before worrying about tenses.
