Which part?

Not owning a car and being able to take a road trip whenever and where ever the hell you want at the drop of a hat. That's a loss of freedom IMO.

fact that the majority of reasons for having to drive somewhere in the first place will be solved by technology.

So depressing. We live in a beautiful country that is easily explored by car. Sometimes the point of going somewhere is just to go and get out there. Good luck driving mountain roads like this with your autonomous vehicles and software.

I work remotely. I cover three states and enjoy the hell out of driving through them.

VR technology will make most in person services remotely accessible (school, doctor visits, banking etc).

Maybe, but at this point I still get calls from doctors to come and hold their hand through a procedure. If I wasn't needed in person couldn't they just facetime me?

I'm not ubering to the hiking trail

Oh I agree completely. I'm not towing my boat to the lake in an Uber truck . Owning your car won't go away but the need for it will be greatly reduced and many won't feel it to be necessary at all in the future.

Sports cars are getting away from it because autos are faster. They're directly coupled now and don't waste power like torque converter autos.

Was researching pre-owned Corvettes recently, was surprised to find there were model years in the 2000s where none were sold with a manual trans. To hell with technology, a real sports car should have a manual stick. Currently mostly drive a Wrangler with manual trans.

In a world with "cars as a service" I would imagine it would still be much cheaper to just rent a car for a road trip instead of owning one.

Augmented Reality tech will place you in a meeting with coworkers and customers in the future. There will be no need to drive across three states.

Again augmented reality will place you in the room with them remotely.

Good read here on difference between VR and AR. I believe VR will be the entertainment/learning software of the future and AR will be the business software of the future.

Except for later generation vette's I don't know why anyone would want an auto in one.

Must be the long wheel base. I ride though that smooth as can be.

I've heard from a friend that when he ordered his Ferrari 458 Italia, he couldn't get it in Manual. Paddle shift is as good as it gets.

I'm sure a lot of people don't know how to harness a horse to a carriage. Why? Because it's obsolete technology, and they don't need to know.

Currently looking for a new-to-him car for my son and he insists on getting a stick.

Good for him!

I am shocked it is that high. Is that 18% 'people who know technically how to drive a stick' or 'people who can competently get from A to B w/o stalling multiple times or destroying the clutch?'

Autonomous vehicles will be the norm and "cars as a service" will take over instead of outright owning a car. Why own a car when you can press a button on your phone and have one there in minutes? Why even bother to drive it when software can do it for you?

2 out of three of my vehicles are manual. A manual in the mountains is the only way to go. Downshifting an auto just isn't the same.

What?? Really?? Are they including non-driving population as well??I know a few people that have never driven one , but the ones who have outweighs that #.. Hell I prefer a manual gearbox on certain cars..
