What justice they speak of? What tools are neccessary to improve the students' scholastic achievement? These are the things I never see listed. Definitely never see it contrasted with a better school.

-raise average salaries to just over $100k a year
-don’t touch our multi million dollar pensions
-keep our healthcare costs at basically zero
-hire thousands more support staff
-open dozens of new schools (in a shrinking district)
-demand the city pass new taxes such as a corporate head tax, a millionaire tax, and a city income tax despite already having the 4Th highest property taxes and thee highest sales tax in the country
-demand the city fix the housing crisis
-housing subsidies for lower paid staff
There’s more.
These aren't just teachers, then. They are political activists. That's not a negotiation for higher pay. These "demands" sound like a Governor's policy platform.

Politics and unions go hand in hand in Chicago.
This is as much about their own contract as it is letting the current mayor know that she better do exactly what they tell her or her arse will be out.

We need to have the tools we need to do the job at our schools. We need pay and benefits that will give us dignity and respect.
Saying you need the "tools" to better do your job and then saying you want more pay and benefits in the same breath doesn't really cast your position in a great light.

Let's be honest, this is more about increasing their share of the public trough and growing the size and power of the union. All done under the guise of bettering the students.
Funny thing is, I have a friend who is a CEO of a charter school system here, another who is a principal at a charter school, and another who is a teacher at a charter school. They are not union, they are paid well, well resourced, and they like their jobs. Funny how that works when you make it about rewarding the best talent and you cut the bureaucracy.

Saw some interesting stats on the chicago news last night:
-Avg CTU salary: $71,000
The package they want would raise each taxpayers property tax by $235/year. What the city offered them would raise it by $13 I believe.

The police should walk out next.
Then, they can "have that conversation" that really needs to be had.
