It does not have to be a named storm to do damage, just look what happen here about a week and a half ago.

What day is this most likely to make landfall if it gets back out in the gulf?
That is dependent on where it goes if it does get in the Gulf. The more east it is the earlier it will be (something like Tues/Tues night), and the further west it goes, the later the time/date of landfall.

120 hr GFS shows it entering the gulf

Sure does, but they still have it headed towards Tampa on Tuesday evening

Convection is just going off tonight and appears to be slowly catching the possible LLC. Who knows if this means anything but still pretty impressive with maxed out scale.

Wow, pretty cool to look at.
GFS still has the system in the gulf at 156 hours (next Wednesday at noon)

No, did my grad work on atmospheric dispersion modeling and continued to do work in that area for my PhD. However, got burned out working Katrina/Rita and took a job in DC. I ditched my PhD work at that point and never resumed it. Now I just have a bunch of useless knowledge but hope to move over to NOAA/NWS as a SES in the future.
You dumb. I'm working on my dissertation right now. I will be a Dr.

PhD isn't as cracked up as it's played up lol.
Unless you want to work for the Feds or in academia...maybe private consulting after a while.

I admittedly know very little about weather, but is Gaston a threat to us as well?
ETA: nvm just read it's predicted to touch Bermuda, then go into the Atlantic and weaken

I think the research/travel aspect of a phd is alone worth it. Plus it'll help with a decent job afterwords

In some fields I would agree...if you are really research oriented and love the publish or perish mindset of academia then I can see it being worth it.
Puts you in a tough place pay wise, at least for the 4 or 6 years your stuck doing your dissertation...then you got to do post doc which would be cool for travel but that's another couple of years of subpar pay lol

Gaston upgraded to a hurricane no threat to the gulf coast

Where in that big area is the center of circulation? Or is there even one?
Posted on 8/25/16 at 12:10 am to TypoKnig
just a educated guess gonna say the northwest portion of the intense convection, it's really hard to pinpoint the circulation at night.
Posted on 8/25/16 at 12:13 am to TypoKnig
it is noting that it looks like that blob is gonna become the main feature as it is intensifying and weakening the portion of the wave over Hispaniola.

Is the dry air leaving town?

Meh... it's just a bunch of showers. Even if that system tried to get its act together, it would take days before it would become a named system..which I see about a 5% chance of happening at best. Nothing more to worry about.
Dumbass.
