Sounds like you’re giving him a pass. He knew he was among the only ones with a weapon to protect those kids. Thank god he cowered in the corner and saved 17 lives. Whew.
I’m not giving anyone a pass but I’ve been around long enough to know the behind the scenes “badasses” are normally the first to cower and bail.
One person in this thread that I know of can contradict my comments truthfully and he replied.

I was a police officer for over 25 years and a SRO for 6 of those and I will call him a pussy. His main job was to protect those kids. He failed miserably. Screw him.

It's a good start. If we can't expect. Protection when they are around, maybe it's time to dismantle law enforcement and start over.
As of the present, they are report writers.

What does this have to do with anything?
quote:why? do you think no civilian has stopped a criminal before? or is this one incident enough for you to say that since this cop didn't do it, no teacher could?
mean he would've been effective with a gun..
quote:well that's dumb. i'm talking about actual real life solutions and that would be teachers who would want to CC in school being able to.
There were like at least 6 threads after the shooting saying we need to arm and train every teacher

First off, none of this should have been brought public. I think it really, really sucks the school officer didn't go in there, and I definitely think he should have been asked to resign or be fired. The Sheriff though should not have brought those details to light publicly like he did. I understand it would have come to light somewhat with kids and teacher interviews, but nothing like it is now. That dude and his family are going to probably start getting death threats now, heaven forbid what his kids are gonna have to go through, or possibly grand kids.
The Sheriff has made several second hand statements and even admitted that, for instance making a comment that he heard someone else say but doesn't know if that's true or not. What a horrible job at leadership at the Sheriff's office there. You go back and look at Dallas police chief after an awful disaster, and other law enforcement agency heads during things like this, this guy, the Sheriff, is a freaking joke.

Did not read thread, but saw this on the news. That coward SOB should be SHOT.
Yes, he was a LEO and ran away from the first signs of trouble instead of what 95% LEO's would do and that is to protect and serve the people.
I hope this SOB never has a good night to sleep the rest of his life.

these are government employees paid to protect innocent civilians. from the local SRO all the way to the FBI there have been failures in a preventable tragedy.

I understand the heads of the departments, but not some low guy on the totem pole. I'm a firefighter, I've witnessed some over the years not wanna go in a fire, I've witness them refuse to go in to a house with a possible dead person on ambulance runs. They thought they could do it, till it was time to do it. Training is nothing like the real thing. Needless to say, we let them go, we would never publicly announce their names. That was bullshite, I'm sorry.

This whole Sheriff’s office seems to be full of ineptitude and cowardice

police officer fails to do his job, let's only rely on police officers to keep our children safe
It's literally his job and he trains specifically to do it.
If he failed, why do we expect a teacher with some quick firearms training is going to do better?
Those present are more likely to do something meaningful than those not present. Another firearm In the building would give some of the kids a better chance

I didn't call him a pussy. And the for the record, the SRO I was talking about - Deputy Bodre - would have been in the school in a hot minute. He'd been looking for a reason to shoot someone legally since he joined the sheriff's office.
This is an accurate rendering of the man:

Give the guy a second chance to kill the shooter.
Everyone happy, now?

quote:when was this training?
This reminds me exactly of a police training scenario I was in several years ago. An active shooter in an elementary school. What we were being taught was to wait on our back-ups of 3 other people for a total of 4 people to I guess arrive in their patrol cars, enter the building, and walk in a square together to find the shooter facing all different directions as we walked.
i thought since columbine that training said for police to try and confront the gunman as soon as possible to prevent any more loss of life?

i am not going to pass judgement on this man. I have no clue what his intentions were. He had no idea if one shooter or 4. He may have very well been at one part of the school guarding kids there. If he ran and hid behind the bushes thats another story, but i have no clue what happened and am not about to pass judgement on a man in this situation.

That is most certainly not SOP for iberville parish. And their swat team has been training for this scenario since precolumbine.

Another reason the idea of arming all teachers would only work in a perfect world. Assuming that everyone who is armed will actually use their gun for the reason they have it.
Scot Peterson (isn't that also the name of some dude who killed his wife and it became a famous case?) is a pussy. While kids were targeted like fish in a barrel, his natural instinct was to stay away... Although his job was to be interactive if situations like that came up. As for as I am concerned, he has blood on his hands as well.

Surely that school had more than one officer on campus at all times?
