The East Baton Rouge sheriffs office is the property tax collector for the entire parish
Posted on 10/1/19 at 1:54 pm to Golfer
Which seems to be a running theme for a lot of services in the parish.
About the only things which are city-provided are BRPD and BRFD. Almost everything else is a parish wide tax for services.

Incorporated city in Zachary. As in why my profile says “Zachary, LA”.
LOL
Those don't mean anything =)
I'm guessing then Zachary pays a fee to the sheriff to collect taxes on the city's behalf. St. G could do the same.

Dumbass, I only said that the sheriff collected everything on behalf of the city. I explicitly said I don’t know shite about any fees charged.
Read the post.

I don’t know how many times it needs to be explain to you… The sheriffs office is the tax collector for the entire parish Inc. municipality, or not.
The same goes for the parish finance office. They collect all sales and use tax for the parish, incorporated municipality, or not.

The Sheriff's office is paid by the Parish-wide taxes... I doubt that Zachary or Baker or Central or Baton Rouge proper is paying an extra fee for them to do their jobs that taxes are already paying for.
I could be wrong, admittedly.

Ok... so then tell me again why St. G. is doing this? If they aren't going to have any real power or authority to do anything? The parish isn't redistributing fire money from them. Maybe some police money. If everything else is parish wide money and parish wide services, what exactly is going to change? The parish wide money is still going to be used to the betterment of city oF BR and to the detriment of everyone else.
Is it really just about the ability to later form an ISD?
I really thought St G was going to be more of a real city.

I was asking if that was the case in the incorporated cities in EBR not named "Baton Rouge". that's been answered in the lat 6 or so posts... so thanks for the clarification.
Understand the rest of Louisiana operates in a different way.

Because right now Baker, Central, Zachary, and BR have direct control over their budgets.
The unincorporated areas? They get the honor of paying the lion’s share of the parish cost.
St George gets control over their money and they get the ability to do whatever projects they want while BR can no longer fund pet projects for NBR at the expense of unincorporated SBR.

For police and jail and related protection, etc. Yes.
In LA... many if not all sheriffs are also tasked with tax collection. They collect taxes on behalf of other parish agencies and distribute the funds (less a fee).
Most cities in LA collect their own taxes. Apparently, that is not the case for the cities in EBR.

First and foremost, they will have the ability to create an independent school district.
There are also certain segments of existing tax collections that would fall under the control of the muni.

EBR is not the only consolidated government in the state…

But how is St G going to get control over "their money" if the vast majority of taxes and services are parish-wide?
For the record, most of what I have read goes against what you and Doubled are saying. I think the parish is going to cut you off on a lot of this stuff AND stop collecting the money for it. That's where St. G. is going to work. And again, this should be the goal.

How many consolidated governments are there?
EBR, Orleans, and Lafayette?
Of those, pretty much all of Orleans is incorporated into New Orleans anyway while Lafayette is in the process of attempting to kill the merger.

Local sales tax. The other entities are all property tax based.

Highly unlikely. Why would they? The Parish-wide entities have no reason to do this. Why would they give up that tax base?

Biggest area of control will be in road/infrastructure improvements on non-parish & state-maintained roads.

St. George ain’t happening in this day and age. It’s too exclusive and politically incorrect

I don't think there's much anyone can do to stop it. If Jefferson Terrace/Inniswold is any indication of the area as a whole, I think it's going to pass. I drove through there at lunch and there were St George signs everywhere. I saw one "No St George" sign.
