With the “A” being Arts. Is this a new progressive approach to STEM education? I saw an advertisement for this and had not seen it before. It’s always been just STEM.

Art has a place in a well rounded education. Life isn't solely about making money.

Yep, it's becoming steam now..

Even though the point of stem was to focus on the non subjective disciplines, alas... Here we are with art being added in.

A couple schools around here call it stream with the r being religion.

That’s the middle school music teacher inserting herself back into the discussion.

Stick with the sciences and math.

It is an attempt to attempt to change the way people view what is a largely unprofitable field of study.

It is only STEM.

Art as a major is a waste of time and should not be included with other STEM fields.

They're worried the free market is forcing people into useful majors in the hard sciences and away from the courses chock full of liberal socialist utopia propaganda.

No it doesn't. Art is good for passion. But it should be stripped from public funded education.

Closest thing to art that I can justify spending taxpayer dollars on is courses on architecture.

Art has a place as one or two courses in college or maybe a minor.

It should not be offered as a major.

I agree art is beautiful and certainly contributes to a well rounded person and education. But the issue hasn’t been insufficient art majors or music majors or architects.

We have had deficits in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics related fields. Hence the emphasis on STEM education. Adding the A to thiese schools now seems to be just a jobs program for art teachers

I agree to an extent that’s why there are art and music classes. But integrating it with STEM subjects?

I don’t think that this means just having these classes available at the same institution. I think it’s truly integrating into the curriculum so that it’s an integral part of projects and such. I just don’t understand why.

I disagree. Our competitive edge is outside the box thinking. Strip that away and we are basically just China which isn’t good. Art manifests itself into the other stem categories. I disagree with the inclusion on the A into there as it relates to career focus, but it certainly shouldn’t be done away with all together.

It's pretty forced

Some people are wired for the arts, some for science.

Tell that to the art majors looking for a job after graduation.

It is like history, should mostly be learned through self-discovery because your opinion of it determines what you think about it.

Formal teaching of it ends up being indoctrination.

I can only imagine all of the art that will be called racist/sexist/homophobic/otherwise bannable by the approved outlets.

Lee High School in Baton Rouge has advertised itself as a STEAM school, although I think now they are focussing more on the STEM courses. Part of the "Arts" section focuses on Digital Arts, like web development and digital media. They also do things with Computer Science like game design. The engineering courses include design principals and 3-D printing. So it kind of goes along with the STEM courses they offer.

You are more right than you know. There is plenty of need for artists in the entertainment industry, from movies to video games to music. Lots of that training can be done at specific art institutes, but it's also clearly in the purview of traditional institutions as well.
