But the picture is more complicated when it comes to the high STD rates among minorities. Gay and bisexual men make up the vast majority of new syphilis cases. In L.A. County, syphilis rates among African American women are six times higher than white women and three times higher than Latina women.

Interesting syphilis isn’t homophobic but is racist.

Time for another tax hike to bankroll another “Community Action Forum/Conversation” that will spend millions to say it was racism...

We NEED to start the conversation, y'all!

We could start by explaining how the frick an STD outbreak has anything to do with racism.

I'm sure racism is the cause of rampant sexual deviancy in LA.

Northover said that officials need to evaluate what’s called structural or systemic racism, the way housing or education policies may negatively impact people and their health. Studies have found, for example, that people with HIV who had low levels of literacy were less likely to follow their treatment, and that poorer Americans were more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, increasing their risk of STDs.

things like this is why the word racism has almost no meaning anymore.

When people take something like racism and use it for everything to cause a supposed trigger moment, the word becomes nothing more than a filler in a paragraph

Yeah, poor people make bad decisions. Because of racism, obviously.

It's hilarious (and problematic).

Back the halcyon days of the 00s, the hard left would have to manufacturer some linear path to racism. Black schools are underfunded, which means the sex ed programs are failing, which means the STD rates are up. Something like that.

Now they just throw out a statistic and go "well since it OBVIOUSLY can't be some difference in minority behavior, social scientists need to figure out what type of systemic racism is causing this"

I agree. But in this instance, I feel they are definitely using the word incorrectly. I think the phrase they were looking for was "Minority Centric". Guess that wouldn't make as snappy a headline.

Blame the media!!!

If people were more educated on STDs, those with them would disclose it more. Or at least I hope.

Except that's not how learning and basic biology work. There's a significant incentive to not disclosing your STDs- you're more likely to have sex. People who know they have an STD already know that they should disclose it-it's not an education issue.

If you want to make some changes, keep/erect a disincentive in place such as significant jail time for knowingly spreading an STD with an unaware partner. Basically, the opposite of California.

What further education on STDs do you think we need?

We have been teaching about STDs for decades.
