States without income tax - how much of an effect does it have on standard of living?

As mentioned in a thread the other day, I'm applying to jobs. I noticed that Texas and Florida (along with a few other states) do not have state or local income tax.
Is it really helpful for people to get more money in their pocket, or is everything else in the state just more expensive?

Depends on what area of the state you live in for everyday expenses. However, state without income tax have higher property taxes.

Make no mistake you pay one way or another.

It helps a little. But check out the differences in property taxes.
You have to keep in mind, the government will get your money. No state income tax doesn’t mean they are not screwing you in another way.

Basically just property taxes. Stuff isn't any more expensive in Dallas than in other similar areas. Sales tax is still just 8.25%.
If you have kids and live in a good school district, the property taxes are worth it. And if you rent, you don't pay them.

Tennessee has no state income tax, but our sales tax is high at 9.25%

Rent is lower in Dallas than a lot of similarly sized cities. We paid even less in Collin county which has astronomical property taxes.

I lived in Jacksonville. No income tax, sales tax was 6%, property tax was similiar to what I currently pay in St. Tammany which has a 10% sales tax. Auto insurance is alot higher in Louisiana.
I heard Texas property taxes are steep but they seem to have nice houses with a good square footage cost. Maybe ends up a wash.

We pay 10 % where I live in Louisiana.

We have state income tax here and our sales tax is 10.5. Gotta love Louisiana.

They just make it up with property tax.

I'm in Tennessee, it's great. And I believe our sales tax is still lower than Louisianas.
And auto insurance is way cheaper here than Louisiana.

Louisiana butt fooks you in taxes compared to Tenn. Definitely not a wash and my property tax isn’t that bad, even jacked up by double after getting annexed by the city.
Living so close to Georgia means I can go shopping there if I want to avoid Tenn sales tax too, but as stated above Tenn is lower than Louisiana on that too.
