Louisiana had to pay nearly $20,000 to compensate for City Park illegally clearing more than an acre of wetlands for a new championship golf course, park officials said Wednesday (Jan. 27). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last year ruled that the City Park Improvement Association removed 1.31 acres of wetlands near Couturie Forest without a required permit, in violation of the federal Clean Water Act, and construction was ordered to stop.

Damn tree huggers. Wetlands are just a haven for mosquitos, nutria and disease

Nice use of Nixon...since the Clean Water Act (amendment to the Pollution Control Act) was enacted under his Presidency. Not sure how many people remember that.

Yeah, and in the meantime let's destroy the coast.
What a joke.
What a joke.

Ahhhh who cares? A slight rise in sales tax should take care of this issue. Nothing to see here.

Unless of course they are saving the state by minimizing storm surge.

Good. The new golf course is going to be aweosme and a massive source of revenue for the park. Pre-Katrina the golf courses funded the entire park. Including conservation and green efforts.
I can't wait for the new course.

If only Jindal was still governor, the budget would be fine.

Right.
When's the last time anybody gave a flippin shite about that?

the state should be paying 20,000 to have that street north of park renamed. Disgusting, it is 2016 New Orleans Catch up.

Absolutely.
I hope TPC LA enjoyed their run with the Zurich.
Gonna be awesome when it's in New Orleans.

A brutally hot US open would pretty sweet or even better a Ryder cup but that is a pipe dream at this point.

It is still insane I have to rent a kayak to putter around city park, own use is not permitted.

$20k is actually pretty cheap for 1.3 acres of wetland

I didn't know that. I usually take Bayou St.John but I guess that answers my question of where to launch first this spring.

well, that's something new.
and, I'm o.k. with 404 permitting process, but this is a fricking joke:
quote:
Becker has said that the land in question was soaked by a leaking water pipe, which was capped in April. The Corps of Engineers, though, identified the area as bottomland hardwood wetlands that "connect directly to a man-made drainage ditch which ties into City Park's lagoons, Bayou St. John and Lake Pontchartrain."
"While the applicant maintains the wetlands exist due the ruptured water pipe, it is also likely the site reverted to wetlands due to water sheet flow, ponding and the landscape/contours present at the site," the corps said.
In any event, $20k on a $30mm project is not even a blip.
